I am a newbie Apple convert and this year am the happy owner of a 24" iMac, a 32GB iPod Touch and more recently (for Christmas - thanks Santa!) a cracking 16GB Black iPhone.

When I had my iPod Touch, I had all my contacts on there, syncing quietly in the background via MobileMe, my To Do lists and Notebooks (via Toodledoo), all my encrypted personal information in eWallet, etc etc. Fab. Worked a treat. Therefore, it seemed logical to combine the features of my trusty Sony Ericsson W850i (i.e. phone calls and texts) with an iPod Touch = iPhone.

Well, you'd like to think so, but after spending most of the weekend getting it all set up and my contacts as correct as possible etc, I am so disappointed to find that if I am away from desk at a meeting, for example, I have to physically check my iPhone every time to see if I've missed a call or received a text. I am flabbergasted at this basic lack of functionality.

Pleeeeez can sometime tell that I'm missing something here? I have searched the User Manual and various forums, including this one, on the internet, but I have a feeling that this is how it is. It's extremely frustrating. I do not like being bound to checking my phone all the time and was so used to just glancing at my Sony Ericsson to see whether a new envelope or missed call icon had appeared.

I hope this is not going to be the case forever... It was SO nearly perfect!

I'm not quite sure what you mean.

If you're on about the screen not being on to constantly show you that you have a missed call then its the same with all iPhones.

The power needed to keep that screen lit until you notice would drain that battery quick.

When you get a text, it does vibrate/alert upto 3 times. As for calls, nothing to offer there

Thanks for your quick reply - much appreciated. Yes, that is what I mean. Every other mobile phone that I've owned has had this facility, so I'm just really surprised. I don't mean for the screen to be fully lit up, but just for a small grey icon like an envelope or something to be visible.

Is there somewhere in Settings to alter the "up to 3 times" vibrate/alert for received texts?

Another point I have been thinking about is that men carry their iPhones in their pockets or in belt clips, so can more easily detect a call or text, especially if they have vibrate on. Women tend to carry them in handbags so it's not so easy. With my old phone, it was simple for me to visually check whether I'd missed anything with a quick glance, but I have to physically check the iPhone now.

Don't get me wrong, I love my new iPhone and it's hugely better than any other mobile device in lots of ways, but I guess this lack of notification will simply take some getting used to!

Yep. Unfortunately, you'll have to click the button to check whether you missed any alerts.

By the way, I love the name. Love that song :D

Oh well, you can't have everything, and it is totally fabulous in nearly every other way.

Thanks for your comment re LadyStardust. I have used this name in many forums over the years and this is the first time anyone has remarked on it. Mind you, "Ziggy" in your name did give me a big clue as to why you would recognise the fact that it's actually a song (and a damned good one at that!).

"...really quite paradise!"
