I bought a 64 Gb iPad Pro 11" a couple of weeks ago. I have time until January 8th to decide if I want to upgrade to a bigger storage model. Sadly, the next size up is 256 Gb (no 128), and that's $ 200 more. I am worried that I will run out storage soon. I shouldn't because my main use for it is to draw and illustrate, but somehow it's already 1/3 full. Which storage size did you choose? Are you regretting what you chose? Thanks for any info!

In the past I've always gone with the lowest storage option (mainly due to cost) on my iPhones/iPads and regretted it. I always found myself having to delete/offload apps, etc to make room to install updates or download content. This time I got a 512GB iPad Pro 11 knowing that, like you, I was going to be doing artwork and would probably need/want additional space. I also don't upgrade my devices too often and wanted to make sure I had extra capacity for the future.

I plan on choosing 256 GB when Friday rolls by (the day I’ll buy the 2018 iPad Pro), the amount I chose for my current 2017 iPad Pro.

Sorry for the question but what do you mean by illustrate? I mean would you use something like Procreate or Affinity Photo for example? If yes do you want to store only the end result images or also the projects in Procreate/Affiny Photo as well? Do you plan to use Photoshop once it's available?

I am asking because I think that 64 GB might not be enough if you want to store the projects as well.

Also what matters is do you use the iCloud or you store files locally on your iPad. And lastly would you buy WIFI version (more restrictive when it comes to using the cloud as you don't always have Internet connection) or cellular?

I draw and annotate PDFs and got a 64gb 10.5 so I have to constantly save my work from Procreate to my Mac. I do not use cloud services.

Unless I exchange it for a Surface Pro 6 as the 10.5 was $820 with AC and a pencil on sale. If I am going to spend over $1k on mobile now, it better serve all of my needs and wants.

So while I am not upgrading to the 2018 iPP models for various reasons, I am in the exact same boat.

I cannot answer for you OP: maybe there will be a sale between now and then. I have til Jan 10 to exchange.

To answer some questions:
Yes, Photoshop when it comes out (I have a CC subscription)
Yes, Procreate
Yes, I have a tiny iCloud storage subscription (50 Gb)
Wifi iPad only, no LTE

I do want this to be futureproof. But I have a 256 Gb iPhone which I think is overkill. But I guess, better too much storage than not enough?

As I always like to say, overestimating is better than underestimating.

I generally try to get a bit more storage than I think I’ll need, then end up filling it anyway. This time around, I went with 256gb - I travel a lot and like to have movies, shows, and music in case I get wtuck somewhere with no WiFi. Right now, 256 seems to be the sweet spot for me. I blew past 64 pretty quickly.

No way. 64gb is perfect. apple overcharges for storage and ram. There is a wireless external hard drive device available to work with ipad's and it's $65 iirc. Then you can hook up a 1TB or 500Gb drive.
I’m interested to hear more about this - any links or product names?

I'm an illustrator and I'm happy with the 64 GB model. I don't keep all my work in Procreate or Designer though. Export to iCloud when complete and reimport as needed.

I normally keep my iPads for 2 years. 2 years of iCloud storage is a whole lot cheaper than a bump to 256 GB.

It's what works best for your workflow though.

I use the cloud and dropbox so it's a no brainer to just take the 64gb, it's the memory upgrads that Apple skins people with high cost memory, that is cheap for them but really expensive for the buyer.

That's the RAVPower FileHub for $43 -

I've used one for 3 years now and it's great - I generally use it with a 4TB HDD. Having said that, I prefer on-board storage - it's so much faster and convenient - and I have a 256GB LTE 10.5" iPP. I use the FileHub in lieu of cloud storage as I often travel to places where Internet connectivity is dodgy or totally nonexistent.

Can iCloud storage be an addition to local iPad storage? What I mean is I thought iCloud storage just backed up the files, you cannot keep a file on iCloud for example and delete from local storage. Am I wrong? Could I have a 256gb iPad and use more than 256gb storage on iCloud?

You can have files in iCloud that aren't on the device. We're talking about files stored in the Files app not the automatic backups you do.

I have a 200 GB iCloud plan and a 64 GB iPad. I can access all the files in my iCloud just fine. I download them as I need them.

Thanks for that. So say you create a file in pages, how do you store it in iCloud but not on your iPad?

A year from now spending not spending that extra 200 is gonna seem like a bad move imo...once you get over sticker shock
