Am I missing something with the iPad?

If the iPad is inbetween a iPhone and Macbook shouldn't it be a standalone machine?

From what I can tell is if you have movies etc you still need to sync the iPad to a computer.

I know Jobs doesn't like Netbooks but at least they are all encompassing

Right, if you have your own data then I suppose you'd have to sync it with your PC/Mac/whatever to get it on to the iPad. Really though, the iPad is just another funnel that leads to iTunes.

It's more of a larger iPod touch and not a large iPhone since it can't make calls, nor a camera at the moment.

Not if you could connect it to an optical disk drive...

although what springs to mind is digital distribution, as most aren't HD anyway.... and it's more suited to this type of product.

why the damn thing was designed to be activated and synced with a computer to function is beyond me.

Its between a macbook and a smartphone. Apple decided to take the non-standalone part of a smartphone and put it in the iPad.
