What are you even talking about?
Sorry, now about step by step:
- Download any iTunes movie to iPad.
- Turn off WiFi. ( sort of like, driving cross country, or out on a boat 10 miles off shore, or in a plane )
- Try to watch your movie.
The movie you have downloaded to your iPad will fail to play without an internet connection. Apple recommended workaround... yep... turn on AirPlane mode. I guess this prevents the network timeout, closure capture error. But, turning on AirPlane mode and I can no longer listen to my wireless headphones.
The headphones are a minor issue ( just salt in the wound ), the iPad's inability to play an iTunes movie is the real issue.

Im frustrated, but for a different reason. The main one being no 'autoplay' or 'play next' feature. Not to even mention the layout on startup...
However, you can have the device in airplane mode and still enable bluetooth for your headphones.
What! Maybe there is hope!
UPDATE: Heck yeah! That's why I post here... so many smart people. By default, airplane mode turns off Bluetooth, but as mentioned, you can turn it right back on and headphones reconnect.
Well at least it's something.
I still think I should be able to play a movie I have downloaded without fiddling with settings while out relaxing after sailing all night. Yeah, yeah... I just reread that and it's bad. I also get mad when birds take a dump on my Porsche and I have to wait for the help to wash it again. ( I made that last part up... I never wait... ). For the sassy people: I do not own help, nor a Porsche.
My sugar momma does.
