Am I the only one who don’t like the new multitasking?

Hey guys,

I think multitasking in iOS 11 is a step backwards. Here is why:
In iOS 10 you had Notes opened and could swipe from right to left to start the split view. From there you could open the overview and easily open another app like Photos.

in iOS 11 you open Notes and swipe up to see the new dock and there are fixed apps which I chose before and, if enabled, recent apps.
But what if Photos isn’t in my recent and fixed apps in the dock?
Then I have to leave Notes, open Photos, swipe up the dock and open Notes from the recent apps.
Even worse: what if I don’t have recent apps enabled? Is it then even possible to have Notes and Photos opened at the same time?

Maybe I got something wrong but what the hell did Apple do?

From my understanding though I haven't tried iOS 11 on an iPad. Is that multitasking now is more like a mac. Instead of having a separate menu for split screening apps. Even though I agree this seems easier having it in one place. It also gets more complicated if they started adding feature people want in that menu.

With iOS 11 you "get" your apps from the home screen. A menu you already jump to all the time and know where all the icons are. So instead of split screen being it's own thing. It's now more inline with the workflow of using the homescreen or multitasking window together.

So going from a mac to an iPad now would make more sense than before.
 
There are some other threads about this. It's definitely a change in workflow but (I think) it's for the better.

There are a lot of people who would disagree with easily opening another app. That vertical list could often times be quite large and there was very little rhyme or reason for the order of the apps in it.

You go back to Springboard. Tap and hold Photos, tap (with another finger) to re-open Notes and then drag the Photos icon to the side for slideover/splitview. It's easy once you get the hang of it and since you open apps from Springboard finding them is easier.

Edit: For slideover, once you've selected an app it is "sticky" so swiping from the right edge will quickly bring that app back. Splitview is sticky in that those two apps will always be together until you change it.

I wish we could drag apps from the search results in the widget screen.

Adding to Dave-z solution, another way would be to keep app folders on the dock.

I was thinking about if I should say “easily opening” because as you said it was a hassle. What Apple should have done is adding a search bar and that’s it. Would have been so easy!

Thanks so much for the trick with drag the photo app and open Notes. Didn’t know that resp. Didn’t have that in mind anymore.

If you have a connected keyboard, you actually can drag apps from the spotlight search.
 
IMO the new iPad multitasking features are a huge, and welcome, leap forward.

Many of the features will, in fact, rely on you pre-arranging apps in the dock as you’d like (similar to MacOS). And they’ll rely on you pre-arranging Split View pairs that you can jump to via App Switcher. And ultimately, if needed apps are not in the dock or recent apps, you might just have to do it the “old fashioned” way by going the WHOLE way back to the home screen.

I’ll take this tragic inconvenience every day to get the myriad of other benefits I’ve enjoyed thus far on iOS 11 Beta.

Not sure what you mean, you can totally resize a safari window to three sizes, (half screen, 1/3 of screen or pop over)

I kind of agreed with you at first, but have since gotten very used to multitasking the new way. To combat your issues, I just have my most used apps in my dock and an "apps" folder for everything else.

I'm in agreement. I have not been interested in the iPad or iPad Pro at all until now. It's finally got enough multitasking and File management features that instead of a new MacBook my wife and I are looking at an iPad and maybe an iMac instead. The only thing that would seal the deal would be profiles. Not sure how we'd make it work for the two of us, as they're meant to be personal devices the way iOS is built currently.

Am I missing something or is the only way to multi task on the phone is to double click the home button?

Swiping up like how I do on the ipad to get to the multitasking UI only brings up the control center.

Most multitasking features of iOS 11 are iPad-specific
[doublepost=1502926981][/doublepost]On this topic of the new multitasking features and what we don’t like, is anyone aware of whether app developers will be required to follow any particular guidelines regarding Split View, etc.? I hate that Amazon App and Flipboard don’t support it.
 
I don't don't like the new multi-tasking because I don't use an iPad. Please tag your thread with the "iPad" Prefix so it makes more sense. ;)
