Hi,

Well, i'd like to add another powermac G5 to my business line. I'm thinking that prices should be lower now that the new mac pros are out. As sweet and as fast as they seem, I don't need that type of speed. I need a quick and reliable machine which any powermac still is.

so i saw this ad...emailed the lady who won't budge on her pricing at all. I explained that a new 20" apple monitor is only $699 so anything used should be lower and that new mac pros are out, but she says the price is firm. to no big surprise, this hasn't moved since early July.

Am I nuts in thinking this should be cheaper?

The same system (with smaller HD and 512Mb memory) is $2149 (+tax) at the Apple refurbished store. Her price might be about right (if not on a high side) if it also includes applecare.

As for display, let her have it for this price.

She can stay firm, but she'll be holding onto it for some time while the value goes down even more, and eventually she'll have to face the facts and sell at a lower price. It doesn't matter what she paid for it, but what is out, what those prices are and what the market will bear. Check ebay to see some better deals.

i totally forgot to mention that my price is canadian so that's a few hundred than a usd price (still too pricey imho).

also forgot to include that because the year of applecare is up, you can't buy additional applecare for it. (called apple to confirm that).

I'm not sure with the whole Canadian $$ thing, but I still think she's not being realistic.

So that's like US$625 for the monitor and US$1800 for the PM...I think the PM could be a reasonable price with the upgrades it has. I'd say the monitor is still a bit overpriced.

Mac hardware tends to hold its value pretty well...great if you're a seller, but not so good if you're a buyer.

That changes the whole thing. 2000 CAD is $1785. A similar refurbished system at the US Apple store with half the HD space and 1/3 the memory is $2145 (~2400 CAD). ~25% off (accounting for tax) seems almost fair.

The display is still overpriced though.

To WildCowboy: I am a slow typer...
