pssst, look behind you...
Sometimes, (too often) when Ive used the search feature in Cydia & I find a package that Im interested in & I hit the screen shot button for a look see, I will have an advertising of some kind, credit scores & such, pop up in place of a screen shot.

Very irritating. But whats more is it wont go away.

Once I see the ad, I hit the back button & hit the screen shot button again & theres the ad again. Even if I try a different package the same ad will appear again. I have to actually close Cydia, respring & start over or the ad will continue to appear.

Is this normal or have I picked up something thats causing this redirection?

Yes, This is now normal.
Cydia has now supported advertising on some repositories but not all of them.

This means that the ads are normal.

If you want to get rid of it:
Get adblocker for cydia, or run icy instead, it has no ads

I second the Icy idea. I started using it once Cydia became so unusable at the beginning of 3.0. I haven't looked back. I get mad at Cydia just waiting for it to open. Sheesh.
