One of the things that really grates on my nerves about Apple Music is it’s poor (but improving) matching algorithm. Nothing irks me more than listening to an album that I purchased decades ago, only to have a favorite track that has “matched” but with a live version, a remastered version or one from another artist altogether.

Worse yet is the propensity for tracks to just disappear from Apple Music altogether. I suspect this is mostly due to publisher preference but may have geographic copyright concerns.

To add to the pain is the inability to override the matching algorithm by forcing tracks into an upload only state.

So my question reflects tracks that you own that have Matched. What happens to them when, say, the publisher pulls them from Apple Music? If you haven’t downloaded them are they then lost to you forever?

if that’s the case, then Apple REALLY needs to add an option to override matching. I don’t really care about the ability to have an enhanced bitrate version and all my tracks are already DRM free of course.

I have not had the most-matching issue in quite a while. And I have a lot of live tracks that used to be replaced as you mentioned.
But what I did for anything I purchased - either through iTunes, another website or ripped from a cd was make a backup of the files on an external drive. This way if any particular album is pulled by the artist or published, I can always just add it back to my library from the backup.

#1 track that has “matched” but with a live version
#2 one from another artist altogether.
#3 tracks to just disappear from Apple Music altogether.
#4 So my question reflects tracks that you own that have Matched. What happens to them when, say, the publisher pulls them from Apple Music? If you haven’t downloaded them are they then lost to you forever?

I just got a new MacBook Pro with Mojave preinstalled and I upgraded to Catalina. SO FAR in Apple Music I have not noticed either #1, #2, or #3.
#4 is a very good question that I will need to consider.
Two other changes I noticed is that all my AIFF files are now AAC (I am told Apple Music only stores 256k AAC) and although all my files from iTunes that were adjusted with iVolume apparently are "intact", the developer of iVolume has yet to offer an upgrade for Catalina and opinions vary as to whether they will do so.

thank you for the feedback

I’ve also noticed a vastly improved matching system. I didn’t want to rebuild my account from scratch (losing play counts and such) but did manage to manually update al oat all the tracks in my library. I went from about 90% of 70k tracks labeled as Apple Music to less than 3k, with tracks correctly labeled as Matched or Uploaded. Further many of the mismatched tracks are now fixed.

It’s great to see work behind the scenes on this.
