I'm not sure if this is Apple's mistake or not, but I can't find ANY other retailer selling a 500 GB 2.5" drive for under $200. And Apple's online store is selling a triple-interface Seagate FreeAgent Go for $170.

I went to the SoHo store today to see if they had any in stock. They only had the smaller two sizes... for a great deal more than what the online store sells them for.

So... here's a drive you can connect to your Air/AirPort Extreme via USB, or other Macs through FW400 or 800. At $170 I think it's a crazy deal... and might just be an error.

I agree it isn't much, since this model (only difference I see is that it's USB only) is more expensive: http://shopper.cnet.com/hard-drives...014-3186_9-33299903.html?tag=mncol;lst#info-5
Who knows what they mean by it ;).

EDIT:
Not entirely true, I looked more carefully and the one at Apple Store is heavier and thicker, maybe it's older version or something? Only the thinner one is on Seagate's website.

The USB model is shorter, the triple-interface model is a wee bit longer. But I do see what you mean by the Apple Store's and Seagate's dimensions discrepancies. Who knows what'll arrive in the mail!

I can say this is definitely not an old model. The old FreeAgent Go drives were black, and quite ugly. This should go well with the Air for sure.

I don't get it. If this thing is a 2.5" HDD, how can it be an old model? Perhaps this thing isn't a 2.5" drive despite being called a portable drive (which usually refers to the 2.5" variety).

There are plenty of old 2.5" drives. But this one is not old; the case design is 2008; some places refer to them as "FreeAgent Go 2008" in their internal inventory db's.

And I can tell you for sure that this is a 2.5" drive in a portable enclosure.

I'll share my results when it comes in!

Opened a box that contained a FreeAgent Desk 500 GB drive. Very much NOT what I ordered! Ridiculous. I pulled up the page immediately to see if it was still up and it says Shipping: Discontinued.

Sorting it out on the phone as we speak. I really hope they can give me SOME 2.5" triple-interface 500GB drive... for $169.95.

Hmmm... will update!

UPDATE: Unfortunately the Apple store online doesn't sell the LaCie 500 GB rugged disk, which I would've gladly accepted for the same price. I instead got a coupon for $40 off my next purchase of $300 or more... which is silly, but is okay since I was planning on buying a wireless kbd/mouse anyway, plus a portable drive.

I lose.
