Apologies if any of these have been seen/posted before, but a colleague was just sent these images of Katrina brewing before it hit. Looks like something out of Independence Day!

There are 9 in to total but here are five... Crazy

OK, guess it is just the skeptic in me, but were these verified as actual Katrina pics? Sorry, I just always try to sniff out a hoax.

Not trying to be disrespectful, but did your friend actually take these?

<runs to Snopes.com to check it out>

EDIT:

Sorry... Link to reference at Snopes

When readers started forwarding these photographs to us just after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005, our first thought was that the scenes depicted in these images didn't look like either a hurricane or the Gulf Coast. Our second thought was that we've seen these pictures before — many times.

Indeed, these pictures are apparently all-purpose storm photos, trotted out on a near monthly basis and retitled to correspond to the latest large weather phenomenon. These photographs have now been circulated as depicting:

Australian tornadoes, May 2005

Severe storms in southern Alberta, July 2005

Severe storms and tornadoes in Ontario, August 2005

Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast, August 2005

These images are actually photographs of tornadoes taken by storm chaser Mike Hollingshead in southwest Iowa in late spring 2004. Most of them are viewable on the 2004 Digital Photos section of his web site (scroll about halfway down the page).

You want to know what's weird?

I know that those pictures aren't of Katrina.

They were taken in Ontario Canada of a Tornado that struck very close to where my girlfriend went for her cousins wedding this summer.

I was at her house the other day and her mom and dad were looking at them as their friend (possible her moms brother, can't remember) knew someone at the newspaper who took these pictures.

I can probably get a hold of the high res versions.

My bad, the site says this...

Multi-Dimensional Imagery from polar orbiting and geostationary satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-NOAA.

This home page will offer enhanced NOAA Imagery and NOAA Imagery fused with other environmental data sets or modeled output.

Those are awsome photos; Katrina or not. I saw that satellite picture of Katrina on CNN. Glad there's a high res version of it (even if it is fake).

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that appears to be just some thunderstorm and tornado.

Based on the landscape, that looks to be Kansas/Oklahoma, etc

These pictures were taken on Friday Aug 19/05 of the storm and tornadoes that went through Milverton, Dorking, Fergus and Orangeville, Ontario.
The actual pictures were taken near Orangeville, Ontario.

I have all the pictures in a bit higher res (not big enough for a full screen desktop) but if you want them PM me with your email and I'll send them to you.

A friend of a friend in the National Guard snapped 15-200 shots down in New Orleans the first day they got there. Some amazing/depressing/shocking images for sure.

I'm in the process of throwing them up on a slide show on my boss's .mac account. I'll post the link here when I get it finished.

Not that I've seen... there are some really amazing pics out there that get recirculated from time to time, like...

This one for Hurricane Lili

This one for Isabel

...but no actual photos like this for Katrina that I've seen.

nice links, although It's not clear from the post that these too are "fakes" (meaning they are not hurricanes)

I wouldn't image that hurricanes have a clear-cut outer edge, but I would like to see picss like this from the inside of the eye, at sea

It is obvious that they are not Katrina pictures! You cannot take pictures of a hurricane without getting a picture with just wind and rain (or satellite view.)

They are tornados; take it from someone who lives in Tornado alley.

They are awesome pictures though! :)

Sorry for being the bitch here, but these aren't from Katrina. I have these on my work computer sent to me last year. It was a Texas storm. It has nothing to do with Katrina. If you need proof I can provide that tomorrow, but then again something tells me that you're not looking for validity...

I am sorry to sound like I don't care about Katrina, but nothing beautiful came from it...not even these neat photos.
