Amazon Introduces Kindle Voyage

Amazon has introduced a new eink reader, the Kindle Voyage.

Kindle Voyage 300 ppi vs. 212 ppi for the Paperwhite, 4GB storage, 6" flush screen.

Also has a new way to turn pages - "PagePress allows you to turn the page without lifting a finger. Simply apply pressure on the bezel to turn the page, and PagePress will provide a silent haptic response for consistent and immediate feedback."

Only drawback, in my opinion is the price of $199.


Amazon has also updated the lowest price Kindle to a touchscreen device.

The new 6" HD will probably be my Paperwhite 2's replacement. I'm so over eInk. The last time I was highlighting, that thing went from 100 to 0 REALLY quick.

The price on the new Voyage is just wow. Gets to $300 on those 3G models.

I love reading on my Kindle Paperwhite. It is very visible and legible in all lighting conditions. It weighs less than an iPad, only 7.3 ounces. The battery lasts for 2-3 weeks depending on how much I read.

It looks interesting. However, I love reading on my Paperwhite 2. Also, that price is pretty high for a dedicated reader.

If you are a big ereader, now that this is released, watch ebay for paperwhite deals. The 2nd gen paperwhite is fantastic in any lighting conditions, especially outside.

I agree that $199 is too much for a dedicated ereader. I don't think that this will be a big seller. Also, Amazon did not discontinue the Paperwhite. It is still for sale on their website.

Amazon's Kindle readers, at least according to Amazon, are usually a top seller. However, I agree, this price may really change that. We'll see...

I still don't see a reason to update my original Kindle Touch. I wonder how many people upgrade their E-Reader regularly. I also have a hard time seeing my Touch breaking.

If I had a need I would go for the Paperwhite anyway.

yes and no. For people who read a lot it is easily the best option. Tablet screens can make you tired and just stink outside.

True, but the Paperwhite is still available starting at $119. For me, the Voyage isn't worth $80 more.

Agreed. Eink readers just are the best for reading (with sufficient lighting).

They were niche devices in the first place and now that the market is already saturated, it's actually in Amazon's best interest to make a premium offering.

I think there will always be a market for e-ink (at least until new display technology that's glare-free and readable under bright sunlight replaces LCD). The low end market will dwindle but there are bound to be those who will be willing to pay premium prices for a premium product.

I'm somewhat tempted by this. I use my phone for reading quite often and i need to finally get a new e reader.

Drop it to £100 / €135 or throw in some free books offer.

And for a premium device, it still is not very premium looking.

Still cheaper than the original Kindle particularly when you factor in inflation ($399). Besides, base model pricing is more or less on par with the Kobo Aura HD.

I already have two Paperwhites but I think I'll spring for the Voyage. The higher PPI should make for a nice improvement compared to my current Kindles.

£59 bog standard Kindle is the one for me (if I ever wanted to buy one). If I'm not reading an actual book for whatever reason I'll read on my G Pad, it's fine for me.

I tend to upgrade each time, some would call me mad but I even upgraded from the Paperwhite to the Paperwhite 2. After trying it out I found the difference in the screen lighting to be massive, the patchy effect that I got on my original Paperwhite used to annoy me, the Paperwhite 2 screen looks perfect.
I've pre ordered the Voyage as the one thing I really missed on the Paperwhite was being able to use the side of the Kindle to turn the page so I'm very pleased to see this back.
All I have to decide what to do now is whether to sell my Paperwhite 2 to help pay for it or whether to keep it in my work vehicle as a second Kindle.

It depends how much you value the extra features and how much you use it. To be honest I use my Kindle Paperwhite so much I happily pay the double the asking price for it, I've always found them very reasonably priced, you know if Apple made a dedicated e-reader it would cost a lot more than the Kindle's do!
Having the lit display has changed the way people use their Kindle. Partners wanting to read in bed without keeping their partner awake by having to have a light on, and travelling at night with no/poor lighting are both common scenarios that spring to mind. For people in these positions a lot the extra £ for the Paperwhite is a no brainer.

For someone who uses her Paperwhite a lot more than she does her iPhone, I beg to disagree. The 300 ppi is certainly a nice upgrade for a heavy reader who prefers e-ink. That said, the Kobo H2O is equally as tempting for me. I'll likely end up getting both and perhaps an extra of whichever model I like better. Even then, combined cost of those 3 new e-ink readers will still be less than a single iPhone 6 16GB.

Actually about to finally finish school and I have said to myself for a while that once I have the free time back I want to get back into reading.

I see the premium one that the OP made and read a couple comments here but looking for some direction as an e-reader newbie. I do not want a tablet as I have had ipads in the past,etc.

I want something that will last forever battery wise, very easy on the eyes to read in bed, and great screen quality.

Is the old version suitable versus this $199 option or should I pony up and dive right in for the new one?

Also, I was reading about Kindle Unlimited. Sort of like Netflix for books huh? Such a cool idea and seems like a great price at 9.99 a month unless there are free ways?

Such a newbie at this stuff.
