Looks like Amazon may not sell the iPad after all, probably seeing it as too much of a competitor to the Kindle. A couple weeks ago, Amazon put up item pages for all iPad models that allowed you to sign up to be e-mailed when they were available. Those pages still come up in a Google search, but are now dysfunctional on the Amazon site.

A thread on Amazon has people saying that all of their e-mail alerts, etc. have been cancelled.

That would be odd considering they sell other e-readers that compete with the Kindle.

At this time the only major competitor to the Kindle is Sony. Market estimates put Kindle at 45% of ereaders and Sony at 30%. All other readers together make up the balance.

Go and do a search on Sony Reader on Amazon. You'll find a bunch but not one of them are actually sold by Amazon. It's a mixture of Crutchfield, Buy.com, and Video&Audio Center.

Since Amazon is obviously not in the business of selling Kindle competition then apparently none of those other companies has an agreement with Apple for resale. Right now we only know about Best Buy.

They will sell it, just not within the first few weeks. Amazon is first a online store, that is their business. They sell quite a few Apple products, so I don't see them not selling this.

They might have removed it from the listings cause people found it and were commenting on it.

I think Amazon assumed they would sell the iPad like they sell other Apple products and put up a page.

It looks like the only retail outlets for the iPad at this time are Apple and Best Buy.
