This gets mentioned every now and then but seeing it over on Reddit reminded me of this tip. The Amazon Prime Video app will only stream at 720p at its highest quality. However, if you stream through their website on Safari, you can get 1080p.

I just got my first iPad Pro. My XSMax plays Amazon Prime videos much, much better. Now I know why. But when trying to watch through Safari, it just keeps launching the Amazon app (video or Amazon app). How do I stream it in Safari?

Mine stays within Safari and I think it is because under Settings->Safari I have Block Pop-Ups enabled. You can also long-click on a link in Safari and select Open in Background to open the link in a new Safari tab (used to be Open in New Window).

Thanks. I’ll give that a try.

I can’t te you how disappointed I was to get a better stream on an old phone than a brand new iPad Pro!

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. Amazon develops primarily for Android because of their Fire tablet line but this can't be that hard. Maybe they don't want to impact Fire sales.

Edit: btw, the XS Max - which I also have - also only displays 720p in the app. It's just harder to see the difference because of the small screen. Look in the lower left corner - it just says HD, not HD 1080p as it will in the browser.
