Ambient temperature sensor, difference in parts?

Hi!

I have a 2008 Mac Pro which I'm building into a 2006 chassis (2008 chassis is damaged).
The ambient sensors located over the DVD drive's are glued to the chassis, and hard to replace IMO. On the 2008 chassis the cable got damaged when I tried to unplug it, the plastic was brittle and it just broke to tiny pieces when trying to unplug. 90% is left in the plug, and I have a cable with the pins, no plug.

The 2006 temperature sensor and cable are fine, and I'm considering using them on the 2008 logic board, is this possible? The sensors have different model names and chips etc.:

2006: 820-1974-A (C) 2006, Chip: TMP75
2008: 820-2203-A (C) 2007, Chip: LM75A

These chips should be interchangeable... there are about a dozen different companies that make variants of these I2C temperature sensors as drop in replacements. There are minor variances in sensitivity/accuracy, and some do have enhanced registers for vendor unique commands - so it is possible that it may not function correctly if the 2008 bothered to take advantage of a vendor unique feature - but it should cause no physical harm to try it and the odds are it will work perfectly. I know for a fact the exact same driver is used for the TMP75 and LM75A in Linux...

Seems to be right. Finished the build today, no problems AFAIK. Ambient temperature is listed with temp-monitors, nothing out of the ordinary.

Glad it worked out for you! Thanks for posting the result so that others can make use of the knowledge- as these machines age it is good to know the options for spare parts....
