Hey all!
So I have a bit of a GPU n00b question.
My Current System: macpro 5,1 / 2 x 3.33GHz 6-core / 64GB RAM / GTX 980 Ti 6GB
I use this machine mostly for editing (shorts and features) in HD and 4k. I commonly use After Effects, Premiere, Resolve and I still have a legacy project in FCP 7 that I need access to.
I recently updated to 10.12.6 due to some software requirements of some of my apps and as such I need to figure out a good route to switch OS's on my workstation so I can still access my FCP 7 projects. The GTX 980 Ti that I have installed is a great card however updating OS's and switching Boot Drives on start up (Option Key) are a pain in the ass or simply not possible...
I was thinking of switching to an AMD card for these reasons as I believe Mac recognized AMD drivers and I should be able to both of those things (is this true or am I mistaken?)
I don't want to sacrifice the GPU performance that I have been experiencing with my NVIDA card and was wondering if the AMD RX580 8GB would be a good replacement? All the info I can find out there are geared to game peak performance but I NEVER game on this system nor do I do any real 3d rendering etc... Really just film and photo editing. (with some After Effects)
So I guess my questions are these:

So I guess my questions are these:
- Am I correct in thinking the AMD RX580 8GB will display the Boot screen and allow me to update without the hassle that I currently experience with my GTX 980 Ti?
- For Video Editing will I miss the performance edge of the NVIDA card?
- Have any models of the RX580 worked better than others for the MacPro 5,1
