I'm using an Nvidia Quadro M4000 in my Mac Pro 3,1 which is currently dual-boot El Cap and Sierra.

I really like this GPU but ideally I'd like to install at least Mojave to be able to use things like Continuity on this computer and sort of "integrate" it with my phone and MacBook.

The hitch is that I really need the 30-bit colour that the Quadro gives me on my Eizo screen.

So the seemingly certain fact that Nvidia won't ever release Mojave web drivers makes me wonder if I should look for an AMD card that offers 30-bit colour. But which GPUs should I look for? Is there an overview of various AMD GPUs that shows which are 30-bit capable? I've searched but come up with nothing.

Thanks very much in advance
Philip

AFAIK, almost any modern AMD GPU can do that on cMP.

This FAQ mentions that "current" AMD products support 10 bit colour, and shows a Radeon RX 580 as example with this settings. So I guess, anything of the same generation and later will be a sure bet.

In case you'd like to keep the multi boot configuration with El Capitan/Sierra:
-Note that the modern AMD cards e.g. RX 560/ RX 580 etc. are only compatible with OS from High Sierra and later.

-You could consider a KEPLER Nvidia card e.g. GTX 680, which is natively supported from 10.6.8 up to Mojave/Catalina.
For an OS up to High Sierra there are webdrivers available, for Mojave and later it runs with native OS drivers.
I've been using a GTX 780 TI for years , is comparable with a RX 580 and runs any OS from Snow Leopard and up...

Thank you all for the replies.

And thanks for this info, Kees. But hang on, I must be misunderstanding something. Can you really run an Nvidia card on Mojave and Catalina on a cMP3,1?

AFAIK the only graphic cards requierement for Mojave/Catalina is METAL compatibility.
The KEPLER Nvidia family is METAL compatible and will work in Mojave/Catalina.
At the moment I've got one of my MP4,1>5,1 running with Mojave and a GTX 780 TI.

So if that works in a MP4,1>5,1 why shouldnt it work in a MP3,1?

Thanks again, that looks sweet :)

I saw over on the Greg Gant blog that Apple has apparently included Kepler support in Mojave. So that could be an option, even if it would mean using a really old card.

In the meantime I found the AMD WX5100 which seems similar to my Quadro. It's a slim, 1-slot, low power-draw card with lots of GBs. But I'm not sure that would work on a 3,1.

YW!

About the WX5100 : Looks like a very nice card, but not cheap and TBH I guess so, but I'm not sure if it works in a MP3,1...

Non-Quadro nVidia boards do not support 30 bit colour. If you want 30 bit from Kepler you'd be looking at something like a Quadro K5000 or more prefferably, go with an AMD board as they're better supported. You don't need a FirePro or Radeon Pro for 30 bit from AMD, a regular Radeon 7950 will work fine.
