AMD Radeon HD7950 dies after ten minutes/crash report

Today I received my AMD Radeon HD 7950 (flashed for Mac), for my 3,1 Mac Pro (2008). It works brilliantly for about ten minutes of either gaming or stress testing, but then crashes the system; screen goes black and sound stutters, then nothing (although I can still hear hard drives being written for a minute or so). When I restart, the card will initially work, but crash as soon as it is tested in any way. Stress tests (Geek3d and Heaven) will make it crash immediately, as will gaming. Only if I let the card 'cool down' for a while will it work again for ten minutes or so - I can do the stress tests at this time too, and all seems well. (albeit that in Heaven/ Extreme I only get around 20fps, vs. barefeats who post 38.7 - is this normal?).

I put 'cool down' in inverted comma's because I'm not sure that heat is the issue after such a short amount of time. The card doesn't feel particularly hot to the touch (I'm not sure I can read temps on a 3,1, Heaven says cpu temp is 30 - is that in fact the gpu temp?) and fans run normally, too.

I'm confused as to why it works for a while, and then goes bad...

No crashes with my NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT.

Could it be a RAM issue (mine is old, 12Gb only and soon to be replaced)?

I don't see any way your RAM would be the issue. If you just started experiencing issues after installing the new card, there's nothing that points towards the RAM. VRAM maybe, but you can't really do much about that. I'd just return the card and get a new one if I were you. Could try a reinstall of OS X. You ran an Nvidia card before, so maybe you've had ****ed AMD drivers all along without knowing.

Many thanks - yes, I think I'll have to return it; I've spent a day trying to get it to work but the problem remains; works fine for ten mins, then nothing but crashes at increasing rate.
 
I haven't returned the card just yet; thought I'd install Yosemite in case it was a driver issue (I notice the AMD drivers have gone from 1.2.4 to 1.2.8). But sadly the same thing happens.
