With the launch of the Radeon RX 5700, AMD has delivered an updated card that appears to work within the 4,1 / 5,1 cMP's power capabilities,(75 watts - PCIe slot, 75 watts - PCIe aux1, 75 watts PCIe aux 2) without having to make the power supply mod.

Are there any NAVI based drivers lurking in Mojave? Or is this next generation of graphics hardware destined to be supported only in Catalina?

I guess there might be time to include support before Mojave 10.14.6 is released, but not sure there will be any focus on that.

Besides I don't really like the idea that we'd be stuck with the same iteration of the driver in Mojave forever (unless something changes and AMD starts to deliver a "Web Driver" like Nvidia?), since newer drivers are released with MacOS intermediate updates and 10.14.6 will probably be the last Mojave update we'll see. Or maybe Apple will release a few more updates to it being the last MacOS supporting 32 bit apps? Hmm...

I'm wondering if High Sierra will get support for the 5700 as well.

I'm really reluctant to update to Mojave, I'm perfectly fine with HS, for as long as I'll get security updates.

It looks like it has 1 8pin and 1 6pin, isn’t this more than the two mini 6pins can provide from the mb?

Yes, without modification all power pins themselves cannot be "naturally" connected. Unsure if this GPU truly requires the 8-pin or if it has an official option to either not connect (operate at reduced power) or change to dual 6-pin. Realize reports show reduced power load vs. others with 6+8 pin, but proceed with caution.

Apple just updated their eGPU list and this one is not on it:

[doublepost=1562618387][/doublepost]Looks like RX 5700 has SINGLE 8-PIN power and RX 5700 XT has 8-PIN & 6-PIN power. Image above must be the 5700 XT model.

"The Radeon 5700 relies on a single 8-pin power connection, while the XT uses an 8+6 pin configuration."

Are you sure? I'd swear that I've read from several sources that the 5700 has 1 8pin and 1 6pin just like the XT.

It didn't make any sense to me and your findings would confirm that. A single 8-pin makes way more sense.

EDIT: If you look at this picture you'll see that both 5700 have 1 8pin + 1 6pin:

EDIT 2:

Here as well:

Just going from the Engadget article quote...

Best Buy just listed XFX versions of the cards and all images appear to be 8-PIN & 6-PIN configuration, however see what's included. Maybe other models of the 5700 are different?

I'm gonna throw a wild guess out there and say that the 5700 and 5700 XT are the exact same board and, maybe, by flashing the XT bios on the plain one you'll unlock it.

Wait for a specific manufacturer's user guide to surface. There have been AMD cards in the semi-recent past that used "optional" additional power or they would run limited in some capacity.

FYI, this chart shows 180W for RX 5700...

Thx for sharing. 180w is definitely within the capabilities of the cMP based on how the power is drawn.

Tom's hardware was the only review that provided an in-depth measurement across all 3 of the 5700's power interfaces using the Powenetics Project windows app. There may be other reviews out there covering this in more detail.

looking forward to getting this for my egpu. you guys think we can flash the 5700 to xt like 580 4gb to 8gb?

It seems very possible.

Especially both card has identical PCB, and 5700 clearly doesn't need 6+8 pin. Which feel like both of them are actually identical (physically) but just with different firmware.

This likely confirms the 180W report from the chart above, however there is no Mac compatibility listed. All product images and descriptions show 6-PIN & 8-PIN power required. Does not appear to include the 6>8 cable and 4>6 cable in the SAPPHIRE version. XFX version from Best Buy lists Mac compatibility and includes "converter" cables (likely NOT mini 6-pin).

level1tech mention in there review that the video encoder/decoder has had a real update
at 15:45 he talks about, so for video with working drivers it may be good

I don't think we'll see Navi drivers in 10.14.6. It took Apple 3 months to add Vega 20 drivers after Radeon VII was released. So I think the only way you'll get a Navi GPU working in a cMP is with unsupported Catalina. Also, since it's a gaming GPU with very poor compute performance it probably won't run macOS apps as well as RX 580 or Vega. If you're building a Windows or Linux PC solely for gaming then it's an interesting GPU, otherwise it's not.

Compute benchmarks on the RX5700 are mixed. Falling slightly behind the RX580 in some benchmarks, and having great gains in others. While the RX 5700XT has better performance than the RX580 across the board, as to be expected, it uses a bit more power than the RX 5700.

At it's core, NAVI is power friendly consumer oriented chipset that will most likely find it's way into multiple Apple devices in the future. Whether there is support hidden in Mojave that requires KEXT modifications to unlock is still TBD.

Thanks for sharing. If XFX is calling out mac compatibility and they are including a 8-pin to 6-pin power converter, they may have inside info on MacOS compatibility.
