Does anyone have any experience with the AMD WX 9100 on the Mac Pro? I've been thinking of getting this card, primarily for use with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. My main interest is in getting the smoothest real-time playback possible with 4K video editing.

I do use multiple layers and GPU-accelerated effects. I notice that my 8GB of GPU VRAM is always 90%-100% utilized just by playing back a timeline and playback speed can slow depending on what I have where on the timeline. I do proxy editing from time to time, but I'm wondering if this card will help maximize working with native camera formats better (primarily 10-bit XF-AVC from Canon C300 Mark II), so I can forgo proxy creation, given I work on projects where it's many many hours of footage.

Does anyone have any insight on whether the drivers for this card are different than the RX Vega gaming cards on MacOS?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

AFAIK, both card use the same AMD10000Controller.kext, should makes no difference.

Both Apple and AMD haven't provide any special driver for the work station cards in macOS.

Yeah, I don't see what advantage the WX9100 would have in MacOS since it doesn't use workstation drivers in MacOS.

It would perform and see it like it a Vega64 under Mac....

Thanks guys. So the only real advantage here would be the slightly higher performance going up to a Vega 64 vs my current 56 and the extra VRAM then?

It should be slower than the Vega 64 because of lower clock speed.

Also, relatively poor cooling if compare to those after market gaming card. (But sure can fit in the cMP, and only dual slot wide)

However, the extra VRAM is useful (if you can utilise them).

Yeah I'm using the Red Dragon Vega 56 now, which is certainly the widest card I've put in this Mac Pro so far. It's cooling seems overly aggressive for the small PCB, but I guess that's a good thing.

Yes, I could use the VRAM. I already max out the 8GB on this card, along with using most of the processor on the GPU too when video editing. I guess I'm just trying to get a sense of how much more performance it would give me overall. Hard to gauge without just trying out the other card.

This kind of performance improvement is very task specific. There is no way to tell until you really try the card.

hey

how do you power it: dual mini 6 pin (on MB) to 8 pin on VGA + sata (on MB) to 6 pin on VGA? I have ordered the same GPU... is it ok?
