American imac's in Australia?

hey there everybody, after searching the forums with no luck I thought I would put this question to the lovely members of this forum

In a couple of weeks I'm going to America to visit some relatives and I was thinking that it might be a good time to upgrade my imac setup. After looking at both the Australian and American Apple sites there is a massive price difference ($800) between the top-of-the-line imac models. Straight away I thought upgrading my setup is now realistic! But I just wanted to know whether or not an American imac would work in Australia? Would I have to get an Australian imac power chord or could I just get an American to Australian power chord adapter? Is there anything I'm missing? Any input is much appreciated!

they are exactly the same as the Macs in Australia. the power supply is able to use a 240V power source and we use the US keyboard. also the Apple Care warranty is international so if it breaks in Australia you can get it fixed at the Apple Store in Sydney or Melbourne or any Apple reseller.

youll just have to get a new power cord which is the standard computer cord or you could try buying a white one at an Apple Store.

make sure you've studied and understood the tax issues before you decide

As I understand it, if you buy in the US for certified/documented export, you're exempt from state taxes there. I regularly have either a relative or friend in the US, both of whom travel to NZ, to bring some new Mac technology gadget out with them. I've never been required to pay duty, unless the item is above $xx in value. And then, as often as not, if the item is for personal use only, Customs waives the duty anyway. I have an idea that Australia is pretty flexible about Customs duty as well. However, having said all that, I've never tried buying a new computer in the US for use here. Good luck!

Thanks for the help, I had no idea about taxes and duty, but I'm sure if I had to pay any Taxes it would still be cheaper to buy in the U.S. rather than here in Australia. Thanks for your quick responses
