This is the one and only thing that nearly got me to getting an S3 instead of waiting for the next iPhone.

It's that gorgeous, huge, colorful, wonderful, amazing, clear display. I personally think it's better than the Retina Display.

I was a Galaxy hater, but when I saw the display, all hate went away. This display is mind blowing.

What can you say? What are your reactions to AMOLED? Which one is better?

IPS >>> AMOLED

Had a nexus one and the AMOLED screen was notorious for getting the notification bar burnt into the screen

Plus if you are reading things on the internet then it usually will be black text on a white background. IPS/LCD uses little power while displaying white colors while AMOLED uses the most power when displaying whites. AMOLED only uses less power when you have a black screen (which is never).

The AMOLEDs colors are waaaay over saturated and don't appear real at all.

Finally, with AMOLED screens you have that god-awful pentile cheapness display which isn't as crisp as the retina display.

It's alright. Had a galaxy s3. Black was great. Other colors are over saturated and as above it uses the most power when displaying white which is pretty much all websites.

Retina display - natural colours, but it may seem dull to people

I
My HTC Desire got an Amoled display too. I know, not as good as the one in the S3, but still Amoled.
gorgeous? when is an display ever gorgeous? it got 4 Corners which are actually hidden, so it may be gorgeous to look at.
huge aka way too big. Ever tried using that phone with 1 Hand? Looks ridiculous. Furthermore the resolution for this huge display is actually pretty low.
Colorful. It is colorful I give you that, but the colors are soo oversaturated. After a few days you start to hate those shiny, unreal colors. It's only good to look at for a few minutes (the time you are in the store)
wonderful: I really find't know how a display can be wonderful...
amazing: It would be amazing - with 1080p and no PenTile Matrix!
clear: Three Words: PenTile Matrix

They each have their Pro's & Cons. I have them both & enjoy them equally. Why there has to be a "winner" is something I refuse to participate in.

They are different technologies, those who make these claims of excessive power consumption are merely looking for a way to discredit the device.

Spreading FUD is a weak attempt to "prove" their iPhones to be superior. There's nothing suprizing about that. It's all too obvious.

What exactly is wrong with PenTile Matrix? And I see that Samsung learned how to patent. Good for them.

What exactly is wrong with PenTile Matrix?

It's clarity is not as good as the retina display and the reason they use it is because it is cheap.

PenTile, in fact, uses fewer red and blue subpixels as it does green. As such, PenTile also has fewer subpixels than the typical RGB layout found in LCDs and in other AMOLED screens, like the Nokia Lumia 900. Examine a PenTile screen closely and you might be able to detect a little more image granularity when you're looking at fine details and text.

IPS is definitely better than AMOLED, but I think unless you have both phones next to each other many people won't realise.

For example the HTC One X has the nicest looking screen IMO, just gorgeous. It's a super IPS LCD.

----------

You really are good at making me regret about my purchase. I might just return my 5 hour old S3 and wait for the new iPhone.

Maybe just go to a store and compare the screens. Remember the new iPhones screen although larger will still be much smaller than the GSIII's. So if it's the size that you like might want to hold onto it.

1. The amount of subpixels per inch is only 2 times the amount of the ppi - so it's about 610 subpixel per inch.
Compared to the iPhones 978 or the HTC One X's 930 this is a really low value.
And that's the reason why the S3's screen doesn't look as sharp as others with the same or even a lower resolution.

The reasons why they used this screen are:
it's cheap
it lasts longer than (at the same costs) a rgbrgb (Super Amoled Plus) Amoled Screen.
Samsung claims they used the PenTile Matrix on the S3 to get a lifetime of 18 months or more.

I don't know about you guys, but in Austria our contracts bind us for 24 or 36 months - so if the screen fails after 18, there are at least 4 months to go.

EDIT: take a look at those pictures comparing an HTC One X (LCD) with an HTC One S (AMOLED).
http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/the-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-has-a-pentile-display-what-is-it-and-why-should-you-care/

Should you take the new iphone instead of the S3? This question should be about the OS and not about the screen

LoL sorry :(

The SIII has a great screen (especially the size) just that I personally have an aversion to AMOLED :-/

I will always stick with LCD For the reasons I gave above, but if I really wanted to get an android phone I would bite the bullet and buy the HTC One X since it has the best display imo + it's LCD.

No matter what you choose though you will end up getting used to it so if you like the SIII I'd see if I got used to the AMOLED before returning it.

I definitely like HTC One X's screen. That's gorgeous, 720p RGB...

Check out this article

I think the HTC One X's display is one of the best in the market. (Other really good are the iPhones and the Sony Xperia S' [but the S3 in the Sony is outdated])

I disagree. The Galaxy S3 sub-pixel layout is terrible and you notice it especially when it comes to text. The Galaxy S2 has a vastly superior display.

Also, I absolutely hate the blue hue. White isn't white. In some cases, I do like the vibrant colour and I obviously enjoy the deep blacks.

I absolutely believe OLED displays (yes, OLED, not AMOLED - all displays are Active Matrix) are the future, but right now I believe it's not good enough. Brightness is not high enough, it suffers from burn-in, power usage is too high when displays whites and it's got this, in my opinion, awful blue hue.

That doesn't mean the display in the Galaxy S3 is bad. I just believe it can be so much better.

Edit:
Also, I believe the HTC One X and the Sony Xperia S currently have the best displays on the market.

Sony Xperia S
- 1280 x 720 resolution, 4.3" display
- 341 (!) pixels per inch
- Mobile Bravia engine
- IPS technology

HTC One X
- 1280 x 720 resolution, 4.7" display
- 312 pixels per inch (which is good enough)
- 'slcd2'
- excellent viewing angles, maybe even better than what standard IPS offers
- excellent "colour temperature" (6461 K, the golden standard: 6500 K - iPhone 4S: 7070 K)
- 1210:1 contrast ratio, higher than any other LCD display in mobile phone
- Onliest disadvantage: maximum brightness of 432 cd/m² (iPhone 4S: 537 cd/m²)

Ok I am not going to quote a bunch of stats at you.

It's nice that we have so many tech pros here on the site.

I was used to the retina screen on the iP4, it was nice and sharp.

I bought the S3 and notice NO difference in sharpness. As far as colours go, it's great, and I notice no deficiencies. I suppose if you are in a dire battery pinch you can alternate your screen and text colors to reflect black background and white text, but I can't be bothered.

Basically, it's nice to get caught up in stats and opinions of fellow users, but basically it is whether YOU like what you are seeing. Not some dude sitting at his computer naked eating a cheese burger extolling the pros and cons of a device resolution!

Just wanted to say this to the thread starter: If you regeret your purchase now then maybe you should overlook things again.
The main difference is iOS vs Android, and whichever you prefer must is the one you must go for. If you like the clarity of the Retina display then there are many Android phones out there with a comparable screen, and some even have better screen's (for example the One X, that screen is beautiful).
But then again, if Apple goes with in-cell touch and IGZO then the iPhone next may have the most beautiful screen to date. Also beauty is personal preference and taste, so some people may like the over saturated colors of current OLED displays in mobile phones, some may prefer more realistic colors.
- Onliest disadvantage: maximum brightness of 432 cd/m² (iPhone 4S: 537 cd/m²)
Have you ever seen one in person? You can easily still view and see everything on the screen when in direct sunlight! This is because the LCD is very thin which makes it so that you get less reflections.

HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA.....love all the BS in this thread by the so called display tech experts judging a screen with macro shots that they will never ever see with real life use of their phone. How's the piss stained screen on the iPhone working for you? Or how about the bleed? What an effing joke.
To the OP, Just buy what looks good to your eye. Don't go by what all these idiotic tech sites try to show you with macro shots of the screen. Your eyes don't lie, if you like what your seeing, go for it. Don't let FUD interfere with your choice.

Welcome to 2012. Good thing they dont make the Nexus one anymore. It was a good phone but i use black background all the time, have never had nor heard of Burn In, and the pentile screens today look great!

It's clarity is not as good as the retina display and the reason they use it is because it is cheap.

Bleh... red and blue make less of a difference in terms of absolute clarity. Your eye is most sensitive to green, which is why they'd weight it that way. They do the same thing in digital cameras. Pixels go RGBG there.

Colorful. It is colorful I give you that, but the colors are soo oversaturated. After a few days you start to hate those shiny, unreal colors. It's only good to look at for a few minutes (the time you are in the store)
wonderful: I really find't know how a display can be wonderful...

Saturated is usually an issue of a wide gamut that isn't well managed by the OS. Sometimes the number of points used to describe it or the way dithering is used to compensate there can be factors too.

So you came in loving the screen then someone told YOU it's crap and now you don't like it? Sorry either you are being sarcastic or are pathetic.

Personally I think the s3 screen is as good as my 4S's. Just for different reasons. The 4S is clearer but not too much for my eyes, 20/20 uncorrected. The extra real estate easily makes up for any difference in clarity after staring at it awhile I like it more due to less eye strain. It uses less power when accurately compared (size, brightness, etc).

I recently sold my iPad 2 and picked up an iPad 3 but the S3's screen is MUCH better then the iPad 2 (not really saying much) but I don't think the iPad 2's screen was "bad" by any stretch of the imagination. So if you can deal with a iPad 2's display then the S3 is amazing.

I don't think I can give a true comparison of what I personally like better until equal or similar sized screens are compared.
