We had a letter from a customer demanding a refund today for their MacBook.

They claimed that either our company or Apple had decided to "play a joke" on their computer by tampering with one of the menus to say a rude word.

They included a screenshot and right enough, there, in the menu was the words: "F**k off d*ck"

The customer in their letter, seemed really offended by this, and further more, was seeking compensation from us and/or Apple.

Funny thing is, the customer, since being know to Mac's, didn't realise that this rude gesture of words was actually found within the Airport tab of the menu bar. So, obviously, one of their neighbours had named their wireless router "F**k off d*ck".

Had a good chuckle at that I did.

That's an excellent way of being rude to neighbors, I'm totally going to keep this in mind for the future. :D

can you post your reply to this letter?

could it be "F*(^ off stupid D!@# and RTFM"? no wouldn't be fair.

but i can't see how someone thinks that apple would include this in the system. every reasonable person would think there is something else going on.....

And, of course, the customer should demand compensation for the life-altering exposure to foul words and impropriety.

I could see the person wondering what was going on - which is what happened. They thought Apple or the shop (most likely the shop) had messed with the computer.

If I remember right, the AP status icon is in the menu bar by default. So you get a new user who has never seen the AP icon before. They may have clicked on it or may not have clicked on it, but on the volume or other icon and either moved the mouse or arrowed over. Either way, they discover a menu telling him where to go...not the most pleasant surprise. A quick explanation would end it right there. If Apple or the shop had tampered with my machine, I'd want compensation (for example, if the HD had been renamed, I'd wonder what else had been done).

Now, could the the person really be just looking for trouble? Yes. But, let's give them the benefit of the doubt. When they come back refusing to accept the explanation, then we can villify. In the meantime, cooler heads should prevail.

In my new apartment, there is a wireless network called "Mac is TITS". I think they could have chosen a better name, but I tend to agree. :p

I do find it odd that a person would NOT have the knowledge to know this was the designated name of an access point, yet somehow knew how to grab a screen shot from their Mac (which isn't very readily documented anywhere). Something tells me it was a litigious computer geek who wanted to see how willing Mac and/or the vendor would be to settle the complaint to keep it quiet. Much like a 2007 rendition of the hypo-in-the-Pepsi gag.

Who knows. We have the complaint in our stockroom with the customer's name and address blacked out.

Oh really?
