I love magazines, and I love websites, but please, please, please… When you guys port your magazines and newspapers digitally over to the iPad, keep the magazine advertisement format. People actually enjoy and will stop to look at gorgeous full-page color ads. But Everybody hates web banners and boxes. — Don't put these into my digital copy of Wired on the iPad. Give me the full-page, full-color ads from the print version.

Not only is this a more pleasurable and beautiful experience for the readers, but more effective for advertisers too.

Great to see those positive votes. I'm a bit surprised though, I was hoping this thread would garner at least enough discussion to foster a couple of replies and encourage more votes.

The whole concept of an ad will change with this device. Think multitouch, think full screen, basically use your imagination.

I don't want this device to just become a place to slap the same format onto, I want it to change how we interact with our media, ads included.

Oh certainly, I don't see a reason ads need to be limited to images. We could have such things as ads that unfold when we pull on them, ads that become video when we tap them, or even ads that have a demo embedded directly within the ad itself!

But in terms of layout and structure, I do hope publishers move away from any sort of design format based on website advertising; Things like banners, or ads embedded in the middle of an article — You'd never see these things in a print periodical.

I agree. I think the full page ad experience from magazines would be wonderful on the iPad and also allow interactiveness which is a big added bonus.

I hope the publishers are thinking along this way, as I think it is smart.

I don't want any unwanted content on iPad, and actually like to block those ads.

Have fun with your outrageously expensive content. ;)

I see magazines being nice and cheap if ads are allowed in the pages.

The price of magazines and newspapers actually goes toward printing, distribution, and retail costs. The magazine revenue comes from the ads. So theoretically it's possible for magazines to be completely free of charge on the iPad, supported by its ads. I expect the smart and competitive magazines to do that, which may ripple through all publications.
