Here's my thought, and I'm sorry if someone else has posted this, I didn't take the time to search this site.

Would this work:
Install XP or Vista on to your mac (in my case, a macbook);
Partition your external hard drive into two partitions (mine being 1TB);
One partition is set up for Mac, one is for PC.

If i booted in xp or vista, would i have access to the partitioned external hard drive?

Thanks for your help

Or partition the external drive as a FAT32 drive, so both OS's can read and write it.

N.B.: If you do this, OS X will write more slowly as they haven't optimized their FAT32 drivers.
