yada yada about the os........ what would a tiltled screen mean? does it mean that the screen has come loose from the casing and it moves about slightly?????

and the hard drive or lack of dvd is not an issue to me. i just want one for the macintosh experience.. maby do a lieelt bit audio recording with it. but againi have a 160 gig laptop drive that i will keep all my crap like family pics games porn that kind of stuff

again stating a fact i can use an old p2 350 mhz and live off it. so 500mhz or 600mhz will still feel nice for running 1 program at a time or 2 tops

We have similar machines at work except they're seriously on OS 8.2. Don't even waste your money on them. If you need a low-end Mac, find a Mac Mini. You can probably find some G4 models on eBay for under $300. I had the last G4 model before the Intel switch and it still works perfectly (although I sold it to someone who had an older Dell machine).

so are you saying they freeze up and never work???? LOOK!!! I dont have 300 dollars to spend on a imac/mac and a mac mini wouldnt work because i have no monitor and then i would have to get a old mac monitor.......

My friend has one of these and it runs Tiger, Safari, iChat, and Mail just fine. They're hardly a waste of money. You'll want more memory for sure, though. Thankfully it accepts PC100 or PC133, which is cheap and plentiful.

There is no such thing as Mac OS 8.2 by the way.

They aren't unusable machines by any stretch. However, nothing you do with one of these is really going to be indicative of "The Macintosh Experience" unless you want to experience it circa 1999. If you can appreciate classic Mac (which I think you have to have lived through in order to enjoy it... and then mostly for nostalgic reasons) then by all means plunk down for one. I'd try to avoid any obviously flawed hardware myself. Tilted screen? No thanks. The displays on these are ticking time bombs as it is.

Mac OS X Tiger is perfectly supported and runs just fine on these systems - Safari, iChat, Mail, iTunes, everything you would want to do on a basic system runs well. You are not bound to the classic Mac OS (9) on these. I don't get why you people keep insisting that you are.

and btw I still have a crt monitor from 1989 and it still runs smoothly just as good as new and a 2001 monitor that i cant tell a difference in or a difference from a new monitor they all look the same to me

oh yeah. I upgraded my original OLLLD Tangerine iMac to I think 256 somethingorother.

it's not pretty in there believe you me.

but it's pretty easy and quick.

it runs jaguar just fine for me.

I remember upgrading the RAM and hard drives on some graphite iMacs a few years ago. It was a fairly trivial procedure (put it monitor-down on a towel and pop the top off). I like the design of those old Macs, particularly the transparent DV models.

But, for the love of God, get a decent mouse. The perfectly round mouse it will probably come with will drive you nuts.

but giong into the moniter control shound have a rotate? i know crt standalone monitors have a way to rotate them slightly so i could fix it maybe but if course i will turn it on before i buy it just to see how bad it really is........

I'm not arguing that at all, just suggesting Tiger on an old G3 probably isn't going to make the positive impression (meaning limited graphics, etc) that it would on something newer. Whereas they really scream with ample ram and OS 9. That's exactly what I'd do if I still had any lying around.

Which brings me to my second point. Granted this is anecdotal, and yes I'm sure many of them are still trucking along, but 4 out of 4 Kihei model iMacs I've had either developed display problems very shortly after I got them, or had them all along.

There is an adjustable stand with two positions on the bottom of every G3 iMac. Your choices are slightly tilted (almost flat)... or very tilted.
