i have a client who would like Yellow (FFFF00) as the background colour on their web site and flyer header, their name would then be on top of that.

The dont have a logo so I am having a nightmare choosing a colour for the text. I have tried kuler and they suggest purple as a complement and it just doesnt look right, and black makes it look like the yellow pages.

Any suggestions or should I just say to them "I am the designer, yellow is CRAP i've done it in... blue, green, grey..."???

You should make them see how horrible it would look with that color selections. Maybe make a demo using another color, so they can see the difference.

If they still insist for yellow, nothing much more you can do. Either do it or say no

Having yellow as a background would be quite distracting, and also would make me have a giant headache.

Perhaps suggest a lighter yellow? FF0 is a bit much, perhaps FF9 would be a better choice. Even if their company color is "Whoa Yellow" I can see no justification for using it as the background. But, the client is the boss, your job is to offer alternatives like Roco said.

why should the content go on the background? i always put my content in a <div> with a neutral background color. that way you can make your client happy AND give them a readable site. you could also try making a snazzy header using that awful yellow color.

rajfantastic had a good suggestion, you could also try using it for a border around key elements to get it in the background without making it the background. Keeps the spirit of their request without following it to it's horrible logical conclusion.

That, or if you give in and do it, don't put that site in your portfolio.

I think that's the best advice - I always do this.. show them what they want and then make a doubley awesome vizual how you think it should look.. if they have any sense they'll see why you designing it... and they aren't

I am on strict instructions that it cannot be an orangey yellow.

I have attached the horrid yellow version I have shown them and then the nicer grey one.

Both very rough and crude at the moment but gives the idea.
