Need help please with a big problem

I was using my imac today and it shut off... dead nothing..

the machine wouldn't power up. checked power cables etc all fine.

then it started to boot up for about two seconds then off.

the 15 mins later it came back on in sleep mode by its self.

the machine wont boot up properly and the screen in very dark at first, after messing with the power button about 5 times it seems to kick in and launch but a still keeps switching off randomly.

this is the most use i have out of it about (40 mins) since it first happened

Things I have done recently.

installed new RAM it was working fine for 2 days before all this

Installed usb to ethernet drivers from here http://www.sustworks.com/site/news_usb_ethernet.html

I installed 360connect for my Xbox 360

I started sharing my internet with my Xbox360 using the imac as the router

I was actually dong some frantic Ebay buying when it crashed (you never know!)

The main problem I have is i don't have my original discs only an OS disc so I cant do a hardware test (any ideas how to circumnavigate that?)

Any help greatly recieved

Thanks

Yeah I'm going to try that tomorrow... it was working well before today though?

one question, why dont u have ur restore discs i dont understand people how do u loose them or mis place them, anyway call apple, first thing id do....

I'd start backing stuff out till it works again (1st up the RAM) or you can pay someone to do it 4 you :p

Well thanks for to those of you that actually tried to help...

 then get ur coupons and send it to apple to get new ones, *cough Moron cough* sorry but i cant tell if ur being serious or scarcastic because i cant hear u or see ur reaction

You can't tell? perhaps you would interested in buying the bean then *cough those in glass houses cough*

You know sometimes i wonder where the hostility towards people that don't know much about computing comes from in these places ... then I just think to myself how I would feel if i'd never seen a naked women in the flesh.

I lost the discs in a house fire along with alot of other stuff, the mac was in a different house at the time GOD I'M SO STUPID ARN'T I...

Meh, just ignore him.

Sorry to hear about your iMac. What exactly happens when you turn the machine on. Do you get any lights, do the fans spin up, is there any noise/beeps. If the sleep LED comes on, what does it do? Does it flash?

Its a strange one, the machine is running now (i'm on it) and working ok but lt still just switches off cold in a split second. When it went down there was nothing, then the slow flashing light when it came back on by itself.

The more I think about it's more than likely the RAM I put in... saying that the network I set up with my xbox has stopped working (well networking) despite it running 100% yesterday and me not changing a thing...

Maybe its actually possessed or I am comp illiterate or a spooky combination of the two

It sounds to me like the RAM might not be fully seated. Try reseating it and making sure that it is fully pushed in. Its not something I've seen a lot of in desktops but on laptops I have seen people complaining that the machine just switches off intermittently when moved after installing RAM. In most cases it is that the RAM has not been fully inserted and when the machine is moved, they come loose.

If it starts not turning on again, check the LED and see if it is flashing. If it is, it quite often indicates a RAM issue.
