I currently have the 2013 Nexus 7 tablet and I'm wondering when the over the air update will be available. I know I can download it from Google and manually flash it but I don't want to do that. Do you think I'll get it before the end of the year?

Google's software roll outs are starting to suffer from the same criticisms as all of their OEMs. There aren't anywhere near the number of Nexus devices in use today as iOS devices (probably a very small fraction) and Google is probably the largest online services provider by a longshot, yet my wife's Nexus 7 still hasn't received its MM OTA update. In the same timeframe, hundreds of millions of iOS devices have now received multiple updates.

This also negates the whole "Nexus or nothing" idea.
My coworker's Nexus 5 got the update though. I played with it a little bit. Meh. Stock Android still doesn't do it for me.
gotta learn to sideload, it sucks that you gotta do it, but just learn
The ability to do this nice. The necessity in order to actually see what are supposed to be timely updates is absurd. Most customers won't have a clue or desire to mess with this.
The most infuriating aspect is that the factory images have been available for awhile now so the software is ready. Why the hell can't they just push the damn updates out?

It feels like they aren't confident enough to roll it out outright. AFAIK they don't run wide betas like Apple. Developer preview is the only one I've heard of, so all the .0's have public betas. If you're gonna release it freakin release it already
Their rollout is still a joke. We were supposed to get monthly security updates on all devices going forward and thats not even rolling out smoothly let alone OS update.
As for likes of Samsung who also promised to follow suit with googles monthly security programme ... well that's an even bigger joke.

It turns out, even Google can't update their own Nexus devices promptly. That really knocks one of the biggest reasons to get a Nexus.
So this year's Nexus owners will see delayed updates for next year's OS. What's the point? I find Nexus devices less and less desirable.

Nope, not me to update in that manner. And after watching the price of the Nexus 6 plummet so quickly to the point of it being ridiculous since it is a flagship has me regretting ever buying that smartphone.
We'll see how long it takes the newly released ones to plummet. I doubt very long.
Well at least you can downgrade nexus devices. You may have to sideload ota updates, but you can downgrade unlike ios
I don't understand why Google couldn't roll out an update to all nexus devices at the same time. They're a monster company and there can't be that many devices compared to iOS. Seems they restrict it on purpose.
Actually I remember a blog post by some Google rep who explained how bashing software update was useless as each device is effectively in a repeating 24-hour lottery to get the update - if you don't get 'picked' when the updater checks you wait until the next day and your device gets another shot. Repeat until successful.
I picked up a cheap Nexus 5 2013 on lollipop for curiosity and was ready to flash the MM image myself. However, on first boot it promoted for the update. Luck of the draw it seems but I'd be miffed if I'd just got the 5x or 6p and was queued up playing lucky dip. Maybe they wrongly assume Nexus is only owned by developers so they expect the factory image to be a fair solution.
