i would like to see google take a more hands on approach with OS releases. I understand you can have carrier specific "skins" but i would like to have a baseline of features available to all users, and if you care to customize, that option is there as well. To me, its a good sign, but they still have some ways to go. It will be interesting to see a year from now how WPS7 does and what impact it makes

Between October 09 and January 10:
* Android u.s market share is up 4.3% ( 7.1% ) ,
* iPhone up 0.3,
while RIM still leads, up by 1.7% to 43%

i agree, i don't think they need to go to apples extremes, but i think its tough to sell consumers on the platform when there isn't even consistency across all carriers. not a major hurdle, but one that Google can adjust quickly. Put out a hardware standard, and OS standard for all carriers, and if folks want to modify, let them modify the "base build"

The fragmentation of Android on the phone is what severely hamper its growth, in the long run.

Makes development more difficult, unless Google can overcome this in their dev SDK.
