Is it necessary for me to delete my recent apps every now and then? I've noticed that whenever I clear Skype, it takes me offline and I don't get any push notifications. So does keeping my recent apps there and not clearing them take up a lot of battery or slow down my phone?

Removing apps from the recent apps list actually kills the app process as well. I don't use Skype but most apps that have a service associated with them continue to receive push notifications (Twitter, etc.). Maybe its an issue with the Skype app?

Personally, I never clear my recent app list. Android has very good memory management where an app should use zero resources when in the background, so it shouldn't be a problem having apps in the list and/or sitting in the background.

Thanks for the help. I tried leaving Skype running without taking it off my recent apps list and I haven't noticed a batter drain difference so far. I'm on a Nexus 4 so if battery life got even worse then it would be noticeable.

The main reason I like to clear the apps is just to keep it looking clean :)

I only keep the 3 apps in mine because I use them a lot throughout the day:
Whatsapp
Instagram
Falcon (best Android Twitter client!)

I have been rebooting a lot since I am trying out so many things and have noticed it clears out the recently used apps list.

But surely all the apps in the list are not actually running are they? One time I had a good 30 apps there. If you can have apps in the recent apps list that are not running I wish there was a setting so it was not cleared on a reboot. I kind of like having my recent apps there all the time. Not a big deal though.

You know I was looking into whatsapp the other so I can easily talk to my girlfriend who is on her ipad all the time, but I didn't see it anywhere in the App Store. I don't think it is available in the US store.

I found it easy with a search.

I use it with all my friends and family but the only bad thing about it is that it doesn't run on tablets. She can use it if she has an iPhone though.

I guess another alternative is kik but I never really used it.

Last time I checked kik is iPhone only too. We are just messaging through Skype now. Imessage was definitely better for this. I wish there could be a true universal messaging system between phones and WiFi only devices.

Clearing it does close the apps but most apps will keep the login or push notification running. I guess Skype isn't set up that way.

I don't have an iPod or iPad to test it but I know kik works on my Nexus 7.

You should use IMO instead, available for both Android and iOS. IMO lets you use Skype, Windows Live Messenger, etc..... It is coded much better than Skype and you will still get notifications if you close it from the recent apps. Skype is a horrible piece of software.

Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna go check it out now.

Do you know if IMO supports video chat over skype while in the IMO app?

They're not all running, but they are in memory. Basically, when an activity loses focus, i.e. its no longer the visible app, it goes into a paused state. It remains in memory and if you go back to the app it should be in the exact same state as when you left it (or a state the developers define when the activity is resumed).

If any apps requires more memory than is available, it will kill off older activities to free memory

What you'll find is that some apps are only a few steps above malware in terms of eating resources and staying resident.

Skype, facebook, and a few other apps are crapware which will slow your tablet down noticeably.

Never had a problem with Skype.
