Android apps constantly updating

My Play Store seemed to forever have apps ready to update. So I set it to update automatically. Now, every single night when I put my phone on charge, at least one app updates. Last night it was five - and I really don't have that many apps.

Why are they forever updating? Do devs just forever tinker? Or are they just rubbish at getting their apps right the first time? And the second time? And the third...

I think Google should introduce an 'update day' where, each week, devs can release their updates.
