Wanted to show this to the forum. According to the IDC, Android smartphones now account for 75% of the mobile devices out there. IOS market share rose to just 14.9% of the whole market in the same quarter. Franky, I was very surprised to hear this report. Even as an Android fan I expected Apple to have a way bigger share of the market than what they currently have. With the massive growth of Android over the previous year that went from 57.5% of the market in Q3 2011 to 75% in Q3 2012, Apple aught to be very scared at this point.

Apple's strategy will never gain marketshare with a high %. Android and Windows #'s will never impress me cause *insert another OS* into that spot and you will get the same #'s. It's not a knock on the OS it is common sense. webOS with the same support would be at that % no problem. Some argue it could have been better for mobile.

When they hit 90% and they will, then you got Windows all over again. Sucks really for the market in the long run, but way to go googs and phone makers, you whored it out enough for sure. Her legs are always wide open.

Maybe MS can make a dent. Might be too late for that though.

Doing the same stuff they did when they got spanked by MS in the 90's. As smart as Jobs was and as good as his vision was on a final product, that vision was very limited, and was his weak spot.

iOS gets it's far worse from my readings. Only thing I dislike about Android is the Carrier BS bloatware and lack of updates which is more the carriers actually, and my normal *insert any OS* on that many devices for marketshare argument. OS that is functional with good support of course. I dont think that's a knock though.

Larry Page does have big buck teeth, so there is one knock. But not at Android.

This doesn't really surprise me, Apple will be fine, but the iPhone indeed got Windows'd, the iPad will be next imo.

They'll still sell in big numbers, but make way for Android/Windows to dominate the mobile space.

Apple could help themsleves out if iOS didn't look like Palm OS from the 90s.

The New Android and Windows Phone 8 look incredible, even RIM is stepping it up with BB 10

As a consumer, it does not matter to you at all.

No you don't.

This is a discussion about marketshare, which doesn't really matter to the customer either, but marketshare and profit margin are two different things in this discussion.

When it comes to profit, yes. Apple overcharges the **** out of its customers, and gets away with it because of marketing imo, but hey more power to them, people eat it up.

I feel like the number will go down as I know plenty of people who had android phones before they got their act together with ics and jelly bean who refuse to buy another one due to how sh*tasticly unstable their old phones were, my girlfriend included. She wants to go back to a dumbphone she hates her Inspire so much haha. Comparable to how so many people wont buy Microsoft due to their 90s habits even though WP8 and W8 are quite nice.

I hope we're not saying the same things about Apple in 5-7 years time. Without Jobs they have not convinced me they are in innovate mode. Rather they appear to be in retrench, hunker down and let's play prevent defense mode.

Well, we are talking tablets. Android is doing fine on a smartphone, but a windows 8 tablet has potential android tablets can only dream about.

And if Apple licensed out iOS to every phone hardware manufacturer, they would be in the same position. That isn't going to happen though.

You have to look at it as iOS is only on iPhone's, Android is diluted across dozens upon dozens of different phones.

To whom? If you're a shareholder or employee than the the most important thing is profit since it affects you directly. If you're a customer (which I assume you are), the lower the profit is the better for you since you're getting a better deal.

Apple as a company still makes a lot of money. As more people switch to smartphones, eventually dumb phones will be phased out. Pretty soon, if you want something low end, it will be a smartphone and there are already a lot of low end Android smartphones available. I don't see Apple getting into the low end market. They will still concentrate on the high end market where they will sell their expensive phones and will make a lot of money from their iTunes/App Store. People who use low end phones may not be willing to shell out more money to buy apps and will probably stick to free apps.

What is also interesting will be the race between MS and RIM. Both are late to the new mobile game with MS being a little ahead with WP7 and now WP8. RIM is still moving phones dispite not having a new phone out in quite a while. RIM is due to release BB10 in Q1 next year. RIM still has a lead over MS and it would be interesting to see which of these can grow more next year. I give the edge to MS due to it having Win8 and Office on its side. RIM's BBM likely will no longer be a factor with so many people moving to Android and iOS as of late and possibly WM7 as well.
