Android-like notification bar?

Is there any way to mimic the pull-down notification bar in Android or at least some way to streamline the process of glancing at new messages and push alerts?

I like how QuickSMS let's you compose messages without leaving your current task, but it's still a pretty intrusive pop up when you get a new txt. PopUp Blocker takes care of the intrusion, but then you still need to end your current task to check messages etc.

Anyone know of a solution for these things??
