According to IDC for 2014Q2

Android 70%
iOS 27%
Windows 3%

or something like that

Lots of people are getting these smaller budget tablets so I can see this.

Obviously the iPads are used more. Like I said the budget tablets are for minor things.
There is absolutely no way anyone can know if iPads or the various Android tablets are used more or less. Ad based analytics can only tell you so much, and even those stats are flawed since Android tablets can bypass ads altogether.

And even though this number of 70% Android penetration into the tablet segment 'seems' significant, I'd be willing to bet many of these tablets included in this stat aren't really even Android, but either forked or white box labels from China that can't even access Google Play. These shouldn't be included IMO.

Unscientifically speaking, it's gotta be the case when 50% are sold at 50% discount and 50% are given away for free

Use my iPad for about 2 things.

Hence why I wouldn't buy another one, it just doesn't justify the cost to me.

BUT my cousin uses his all the time and even runs his business off it, as it has very iOS specific financial software for it.

So horses for courses.

How does IDC or any other analyst firm figure out market share when no manufacturers report how many units they've sold? (apart from Apple). I think ComScore uses a phone survey or a few thousand people? All I'm saying is that its a guess, especially since the majority of Android tablets sold are white box models in China.

IDC tracks shipments.

IDC tracks shipments.

How exactly do they do that since the manufacturers don't reveal shipments? Posting someone outside Samsung gates and counting the number of semi trucks? Someone on the inside at the shipping docks? Calling up a random assortments of distributors? Checking every retail store on the planet?

I'm guessing they call a few major distributors, then extrapolate using an arbitrary figure?

Not sure how they do it, to be honest.

I read that and it still doesn't make sense.

Android Tablets are junk though so who cares

please

my note 12.2 tablet is better in pretty much every area than any ipad i could get for my needs. The fact you aren't restricted on android tablets is a big selling point for alot of people.

The display on the new android tablets are simply stunning.

Even my Note 10.1 (2012) works better than iPad Air (which I sold few days ago).

But if you buy an android tablet with 50dollars, you get a device for 50dollars. What do you expect to get with that amount of money? Premium, high quality android tablet? People should use their common sense when they buy stuff. They buy cheap crap and then they are disappointed... I have seen many times "android is junk, my tablet doesnt work at all.... what do i do?" And when asking about manufacturer to provide help, those tablets are usually somekind of nameless devices...

I have a samsung galaxy tab 3, I acquired it as a freebie when I up-graded my mobile (cell, in USA ;)) and I must say it is very useful for when I can't take my Mac with me, due to lack of power, (I have a caravan and sometimes go where it is solar power/battery). It checks and sends email, I can read my books and generally surf the net when I want and keep track of my diary. I wouldn't have bought one, even and iPad, but I was brought up to not look a gift-horse in the mouth :D It seems quite competent to complete all of these tasks and the screen is easy to look at and use.

Android basically being and Open Source OS, a lot of companies and manufacturers in the Developing Countries use it for their cheap/affordable Tablets. Although, the quality of the product might be an issue.

I guess this 70% market share stat is mostly dominated by Tablets sold outside the US.

I tend to use my Nexus 7 more than my iPad. I use my iPad more for work and my N7 for everything else.

I think people are attracted to the Android tablets because they are cheaper than picking a $500 iPad. A lot of Android tablet are just dreadful but I find the N7 is a nice balance between cost and fuction.
