Hi.

I'm sure this has been raised before, but nothing leaps out at me when I do a search.

We all know that when we take a photo on our iPhone it goes straight to the Apple Photos app on the iPhone, but also goes -via iCloud- into the Photos app of every other Apple device we have. It works brilliantly and requires no input whatever from the user.

So, I have several friends who own iPads, on which they would like to view their photos, but have Android phones rather than iPhones. These friends are rather elderly and a bit 'techphobic', and so the least they have to do in the process the better.

My question is: Is there any way to get photos taken on their Android phones to work with the Apple Photos app on their iPad in that beautifully simple way that it does with iPhone without them having to do anything?

Thanks

Beautifully simple way? No. With Android and iPad... you don't get a seamless experience.

But being that I store all my photos under Apple Photos (iCloud) and have an Android phone... the way I manage to transfer photos is utilizing Google Drive.

Once I take a photo with my Android phone... I use the share sheet to immediately upload it to a saved folder (this way I'll know where my photos are stored) on Google Drive. And I use Google Drive app on the iPad to transfer it. The action on the iPad would be "Send A Copy" which would give you the option to Save Image.

And when you do it as much as me... it becomes second nature. But let me add my suggestion... if what you mention that they are elderly, getting them accustomed to Google Photos would be the best solution. That way once they take a picture with their Android phone... it goes to Google Photos. And if they have Google Photos on the iPad... they won't have to jump through hoops.

In my opinion, getting any person of any age in that position to use Google Photos is the way to go.

And I agree… but for me, majority of my family/friends use Apple Photos. So, there’s plenty of Shared Albums amongst my social circle and then I use iMessage to send photos. I know my methods might seem unorthodox... but it's the price I pay when I prefer using Apple Photos (iCloud) and Android.

Yeah... There's no way these 80+ year olds would be able to understand share sheets, folders and Google Drive, sadly.

But putting Google Photos on their iPads seems like a good idea. Is Apple missing a trick by not allowing their Photos app on Android phones when Google Photos will go onto iPads?

Thanks for that.

Totally makes sense.

Umm.. No trick behind it, just a business decision. I believe users can access their Apple Photo gallery on the web… but I think Apple pulling their resources to make a Photos app on Android simple won’t benefit them.

That is a very smart process to share photos between two different operating systems. I never thought of it when I used my Note9 and my family and friends are all on iOS.

Yeah Apple just wants to focus its resources on building the very best apps and experiences on its own platforms.

I disagree.

It's more so Apple wants to keep people on their platform... same approach with iMessage. Because they have the resources to build an Apple Photos app on Android, they choose not to because it keeps Apple users on their platform that's why I said it's a business decision.

Only reason why there's a Music App on Android is to help grow that business... because if Apple allowed Music App only on their devices, it wouldn't be beneficial given its a service dictated by growing its user base.

I use iphones and androids regularly, on iphone I simply allow Google Photos access to sync my Apple photo library then it just syncs in the background, works great.
