Android-Push email?

Can someone help me out here, I can't find an option to "push" my email on my S4. Apparently the Gmail app does this but not the stock email app. I have a Gmail account but it's hardly ever used, I use iCloud/Exchange instead (and refuse to switch over).

It can be set to retrieve emails at intervals, but the lowest is every 5 minutes

In the same vein can someone recommend me a good app that'll offer a unified inbox (like iOS) for my iCloud and Exchange email accounts (I use exchange for university, it's important I get these emails ASAP)

While I'm disappointed that the stock email client sucks, I have to rub it in for a moment here..

The Gmail app is really awesome - to the point that if I read a new email on my computer or one of my other android devices, the notification for that new email on my other devices will go away.

That's slick.

Exchange should push without any issues, I did use my Hotmail setup like this

iCloud will not push though, you only get push on Apple devices

You can have push on exchange accounts with Android. Not sure about iCloud.

The stock email app has push email support. You just need an email protocol that supports it. What email provider do you use. Hotmail/outlook/live.com all support it.

I don't know why anyone would use an Icloud email when there are much better alternatives out there like hotmail.

FYI, your issue has nothing to do with Android.

There is only one official Android email client and that is gmail. Your issue is with Samsung's email client.

Actually the issue is with Apple. Exchange should work with no problem on TW. iCloud only pushes on Apple.

iCloud uses IMAP push, so you have to set it up this way. I'm using maildroid pro with yahoo, gmail, and iCloud, and all services work fine with push. Not sure if the stock samsung supports it, but you have to enter your credentials like this:

Email Address : JohnSmith@me.com
Username : JohnSmith
Password : xxxxxxxxx
Incoming Mail Server : p01-imap.mail.me.com
SSL - On
Port - 993
Outgoing Mail Server : p01-smtp.mail.me.com
SSL - On
Port - 587

I didnt think you don't need the p01- part and for outgoing choose TLS rather than SSL if it doesn't accept it.

I tried it without the p01- at first and the app couldnt log in, after i added it, it worked fine. I guess it depends on the mail app or the account.

Forward all emails to gmail. Then go into gmail settings on computer and setup iCloud as the send from address. Everything will push and when u reply it'll come from your iCloud account.

I agree with that as well. I was simply pointing out to her that her displeasure with the stock email client on the S4 needs to be directed at Samsung, not Android.

Thanks for the heads up. I've installed Maildroid and it works quite well. For some reason it doesn't show an unread count and has trouble with conversation view but it's not a big deal.

yeah plus you can use the cool interface of gmail.com on a computer and still use icloud email. bc we all know icloud.com sucks lol

also, it may take a bit of time to recognize your icloud email as the send from. in my experience it wasn't immediate from the app.

Yeah, I admitted my problem wasn't Android related and found a solution a couple of posts up (did you just read the first post )

I'll give you the iCloud example though, that was sheer stubbornness. That being said, waiting 5 minutes for email is ********.

I give you iCloud, but you realize many business uses exchange server for their email and calendar services. I think Google needs to push OEMS to make sure they work better with this.

The problem is that you need to pay licensing fees to include exchange specific functionality

Samsung, HTC, etc already pay those fees along with the fees for the file system and other patents Android uses to Microsoft.

All these phones already support remote wipe and locking with Exchange. It just has to do with poorly done email and calendar syncing with the client.

That program Touchdown probably pays microsoft a few pennies (maybe more the rate did go up) for every sale on their program to suppose exchange as well as they do.

Why dont you move away from iCloud? Apple always makes life difficult with their proprietary system. Since you don't mind data going thru 3rd party server, then Google is so much better with its platform independent and faster and higher throughput.

Yes, but Google simply maintains AOSP code, of which the default "Email" program is apart. It's problematic to include this kind of code in an opensource project.

The could include it in their "GMail" program as that is closed source but at this time it is Gmail only.

My opinion is that they should get rid of the open source email client altogether and then allow thirdparty email accounts within the GMail app (which seems to see much more frequent development).

There is absolutely no reason why OEMS like HTC and Samsung shouldnt have full Exchange support, but I dont believe that this is on Google given the license, type and scope of code they directly support.

Well you raise a good point as I believe this is one of the reasons why Google has moved away from SD card support with Nexus devices (along with technical reasons such as corruption). It removes the need to include FAT support and has mitigated this as a potential patent target.
