Been a long time Android user since the HTC One X and had various Sony, Htc and Samsung phones. Currently on a Galaxy S9 and I’m due a upgrade in the next month or so.
I have been using IPads for a long while also. Upgraded my Air 2 to a Pro 2018 last year and it’s my most used device it just bliss.

But I fancy a change to IPhone this year to see if I like it as much as my iPad

What would be the recommended model that is equal to my S9 camera wise Mainly and battery life.
mainly use phone for the camera, Spotify and texts and iPad for everything else.
XS, XS Max, or 11 can’t afford the pro models of the 11.

If you're wondering what to get, then simply get the iPhone 11. It's the iPhone for "everyone."

Will I not hate the lower resolution screen? If it's as good as the ipad pro and ok in direct sunlight I'll be happy. Run my S9 at 1080p to save battery life.

Your iPad has a 264ppi while iPhone 11 has 325ppi. Which means iPhone 11 has, in fact, a sharper screen. It is very good. S9 has an OLED screen and these, actually, need to have a higher ppi because of subpixel rendering (this goes for iPhone X/XS/11 Pro as well), while 11 has an LCD screen.

Anyway, resolution is just one element that goes into screen quality. My friend has an iPhone XR (the same screen as 11), and I think it's a great screen. The resolution didn't bother me one bit. Of course, if you put your face really close and look for it - you will notice it. For me, the resolution is quite good. One thing that will be different is the fact it's not an OLED screen, so that blacks won't be as deep - they will be like on your iPad Pro.

TLDR: I don't think the screen will bother you. Personally, I would choose an iPhone 11 (or any iPhone, really) over any Android phone, but that's mainly because I prefer iOS. And it comes down to that, really, it will be iOS vs Android. Hardware is great both on Samsung and iPhone (though I do prefer the iPhone here as well).

Indeed. I inherited my wife's 7 Plus. While it's vastly superior to the android phone I was using (BLU R2), the difference between iOS and Android is driving me bonkers. Getting movies onto my phone has been a real chore, since I don't like iTunes. I found a way via FTP, so it's all good now. Still it's like learning to drive on the left side when I've been driving on the right side all my life. I might go back to Android because I want root access and not having to fight with the OS every time it blocks me from doing what might be bad for me.;)

I went from 10 years of Android to the XR than to the 11. I went with the 11 because It has the exact same camera as the Pro's (minus the telephoto), same A13 chip, face iD and it's the best size imo. Plus i won't spend more than $1000 CAD on a phone. Before judging the 828p display just make sure you go look at it in person. It looks great.

My Mum has the XR and side by side I’ll be honest I couldn’t really notice much of a difference. Maybe the S9 is slightly brighter. However he Xr takes better photos with more natural colours.
my main device will always be my iPad and I’d like to keep google photos as I like looking back over my photos from the past etc.

Ya Google Photos works good on ios.

Just curious, what made you get an iPad instead of an Android tablet ?

I got given a free Samsung tablet in the past and it was a hideous experienc, so I got myself a Mini 2 16gb beginning of 2015 to use on holiday and enjoyed the experience, however it ran out of memory so I flogged it and used my phone. Decided I needed a tablet again to store photos so got a Huawei M5 which was perfect but felt slow.

So I had a Air 2 donated by my step daughter when she upgraded and used that till the battery wouldn’t hold charge so bought the Pro.

It gets used for everything but mostly editing photos especially when I’m on holiday, surfing the web.
When I put it on charge and carry on with my S9 it feels sluggish in comparison.

Get the 5.8" iPhone 11 Pro if your budget is high enough. PLEASE PAY MORE FOR THE 256GB STORAGE MODEL. YOU WILL THANK ME LATER WHEN YOUR 256GB IPHONE GETS CLOSE TO 64GB OF USAGE. The size of the 11 Pro is perfect, the standard 11 is larger than the 11 Pro, so the standard 11 may feel too large sometimes, especially coming from an S9 which is smaller than the standard 11. The 11 Pro has an OLED display, like your S9, and the standard 11's display is LCD, so if you go with the standard 11, you may miss the poppy colors and deep black levels.

VLC has been great for me. I wirelessly transfer movies from my PC digital collection to the VLC app. You just turn on WIFI sharing in the app on your iPad/iPhone and then enter the url given to you by VLC into a browser on your pc. Then drag and drop the files you want to transfer. For me, this simple and quick. It also works for my Apple TV. I don’t like running my pc to stream movies on my network so I’ll transfer them and watch. VLC lets me watch the movie as it transfers to the Apple TV, which was an unexpected benefit I happened across.

to the OP
I bought iPhone XR and iPhone 11 for my daughters. They are both great and the screens aren’t as bad as the specs make them seem like they might be..... BUT...... I personally see the difference jumping from my iPhone X. I greatly prefer the OLED and higher resolution of my X. Coming from an S9, I recommend playing around with an 11 if you have the chance. Most people will be totally happy with the 11, so it’s likely you will too. But if not, then I say go for an XS. Either phone will treat you well. Most carriers have a 30 day return policy. So you can stay at home and try one out and if you like it, keep it.

Why not just use the cloud ? $3/month for 200GB.
If you go on a long flight, you would not have enough room for several hours of movies downloaded if your iPhone is a 64GB version. In those situations, you would need more than 64GB unless you delete all your apps before flying. Just pay more for the 256GB storage model anyway to avoid ever having to worry about storage.

Disagree. You can readily put several hours worth of videos/movies on a 64GB iPhone without having to "delete all of your apps". The key is not download 4K content. Instead, stick with a lower bitrate encodes at 1080p or lower. Using Netflix as an example:

Taken from this website: https://gizmodo.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-new-netflix-downloads-1789516274

"Say you’re flying from New York to Los Angeles and want to watch downloaded Netflix videos the whole time. The flight takes about 5 hours and 23 minutes, so you’d need six Black Mirror episodes. That would require 1.86 gigabytes of free space for SD and 2.45 gigabytes for HD. So unless you’re flying outside of the country, you probably won’t need much more than that."

Granted 1080p downloads will consume more size, but even then 10 hours of content should consume less than 10GB of space, something which can be achieved using a 64GB iPhone.

To be fair I currently have 64gb S9 and have 30gb free. Most of my photos are stored on google photos and I've loads of space left. Movies I usually download them onto my ipad pro which is 256gb. And even then it's only 3/4 max then delete.
Longest flight I go on currently is Manchester (uk) to Rhodes in Greece at 4.5 hours or Manchester to Orlando 9 hours.

I am talking about iTunes downloading.

You didn’t mention it in your post.

Furthermore, it reinforces my initial point to not download high bit rate files. The improvement in visual quality (IMHO) isn’t worth the large increase in file size, especially when displayed on a phone screen.

You make the assumption that someone has the ability to get whatever video they want at whatever quality they want. If someone owns their movies on iTunes they don’t have much of an option to reduce file sizes. People don’t want to buy a video somewhere else just for that reason. Sure, if Netflix or another service offers the video, that’s a choice they can make if it’s available to them, but that’s often not the case. Sometimes having the extra storage is worth the cost of its convenience.

When did I state that?

Sure. My initial point still stands that you can fit several hours worth of video/movies onto a 64GB iPhone.

By claiming that someone shouldn’t download “high bit rate files” and “key is not download 4K content.”

i don’t disagree with 64GB being able to hold a good chunk of movies. But that also depends on other factors that are different for each user.

Thats right, I did state that. Again, where did I make the assumption that you claim I‘ve made?

Stating “don’t download high but rate files” is a statement, nothing more. How you choose to interpret that passage, and whatever assumptions you choose to make from that statement is on you.

Ya well i got about 45GB free on my 64Gb iphone at all times. I can add 10 1080p movies and only use another 20 - 25GB of space. But than again if i'm going on a long flight or if i flew a lot i would be using a laptop or a tablet.

I explained it. It doesn’t add any value to this discussion to debate about how and why I interpreted your post.
