Android Wear's biggest mistake

I'll probably buy an entry-level Apple Watch, because it's 350$ (which, admittedly is actually kind of steep) and I'm a sucker for new tech that works on my iPhone..

but, a year ago i considered android FOR their watches, because the idea is really cool to me.

If android was compatible I would probably opt for one of their watches.

Google did announce plans to bring Android Wear to iOS, but when and what capacity (notifications only?) is unknown.

I'm getting the Apple Watch also. I bought an iPhone 6 Plus at launch but was coming from a Galaxy S5. I had it paired with a Moto 360. I loved the look of the watch, but at the time.. It's functionality and support was lacking badly. I hear it's getting a bit better though.

In which aspects? Because android wear is limited to functionality in the exposed Apple API.

Why is it an Android mistake when it's Apple that restricted it? Apple want to control the whole experience. They would never allow Android to be fully compatible with iOS.

While I agree that Apple will never allow Android Wear to have the same level of integration as the Apple watch. That there is no integration at the moment is Google's fault. It could have the same amount of integration as Pebble's do with iOS, that it doesn't is a choice Google made, not Apple.
By the way I think that was probably a good choice by Google. I'm sure they would want the experience to be consistent with their watches.

I honestly don't know what Google's problem is/was. They make more money from iOS than they do on Android so why the heck would they not allow Androidwear to work with iOS?

I don't fault either company for limiting their smartwatch efforts to their own platform. You're just not going to get the same features and functionality in a cross-platform scenario.

Additionally, it has a lot to do with using the watch as a conduit to sell more phones. Apple is clearly looking to drive iPhone sales and lock-in with the watch. It is a smart strategy. Android manufacturers should do the same.

I still appreciate the post. However (egg on your face), I actually AM involved with and steeped in edm culture. I can see why that would seem "young" to those oblivious to the scene.
Let me tell you... the cheesy "b-boying" they try to capture here is NOT hip, edgy, fresh, accurate, or representative to the culture... underground or mainstream.
I do agree that, now that I'm the ripe old age of my early 30's, this ad was not targeted at me. That's ok; I'd much prefer to be a part of Apple Watch's demographic!! =)

I'm pleased with being a grown up, that's in tune with that which is relevant to me. I firmly believe however that dance and music typically transcend minor age differences... I have yet to attend a dance party & feel even slightly out of place.
As a matter of fact, the premier edm event here in Florida, "Holy Ship!" is a cruise with the best djs in the world performing, and I noticed that it skewed a little older and wealthier. Nobody in attendance seemed fake or "trying to be young". Young or old though... I bet any of them could have also told you that commercial is whack!!!

Speaking from the Apple point of view, I wouldn't want my user experienced tarnished by what I believe is an inferior group of products.

Hence why I doubt we see Android Wear compatibility in any REAL form with iOS. Google will do what they can to link the two because they know they stand to make more money that way.

But Apple tightly controls and cultivates their user experience - and there's no way they'll let another company's (let alone a competitor) devices muddy that experience.

No. Android wear (I own an lg g watch). But android wear won't be popular because they won't get all the device makers on board like android let phone makers basically add crapware to android phones to let them "differentiate themselves" from the pack.

Manufacturers are starting to complain Google is being too strict with android wear.

I have always been early adopter. Got the LG G watch when it first came out summer 2014.

Yeah, and I'm just not blindly hating on Android either. They have a couple nice looking wearables. But if I didn't know better and saw this ad I would be thinking "stay away, stay away!". Same with the shouting and genius ads Apple did, those were awful.

So have you guys thought about this? Android Wear apps are currently downloaded via the Play Store. So by making Android Wear compatible with iOS, you have to think about the intricacies of having to make Android apps work with iOS.

I'm all for making Android Wear available on iOS, but I doubt it'd be the same experience. I'm not sure how open Apple's APIs are compared to Google's.

Regardless, this thread is no longer applicable as Google already announced that they will make it compatible with iOS.

On the topic, it doesn't overly bother me much that it doesn't work with Apple products. For me, I primarily use the GPS logging on my watch for running. I walk in the house after a run, it syncs the GPS data the next time it gets in range of the phone, and thats about it. Beyond that, I leave it on the desk and wear a normal watch the rest of the day.

I have worn it during my normal day work, and I don't really find that the notifications on my wrist really add much to my day to day life. Most notifications are generally crap ones TBH. Nor does the ability to "OK Google" it to do something make my life easier either.

So I certainly don't think I wish I were synced to an Apple phone, and I equally don't feel tied to Google either.

The watches are in their infancy, and ALL makers are still finding their feet ... so I think it makes sense to keep things a little locked down to stop things running away from themselves and becoming too complex too quickly.

Not so much getting Android apps to work on iOS but getting iOS apps to communicate with the Android Wear device.
