Angry Tube question

I have a feeling there's a good explanation for this, but I can't find an answer anywhere. Angry Tube has a feature where you can tap a + and add a video to My Videos. Then, when you go to play the video from there, an entirely different style of player pops up than usual. I thought this was a sneaky way of implementing downloading, but I turning off data and the videos wouldn't play. Half of the reviews mention the ability to download, while many others seem to be moaning about the lack of downloading Can anyone explain what's going on here. I feel like it's definitely doing something either Apple or Google wouldn't like.
