- March 17th, 2015: Nintendo announced that they would be bringing games to Smartphones with its new partnership with Japanese mobile game maker DeNA. (source)
- May 8th, 2015: During Nintendo's financial results earnings, Satoru Iwata announces that they will release 5 games by March 2017. (source)
- February 2nd, 2016: After their first "game" is released (Miitomo), they announce that the second game will feature a 'familiar' character. (source)
- April 27th, 2016: Nintendo announces that they will be making a game based off of Animal Crossing (source)
- May 3rd, 2016: Nintendo says they chose Animal Crossing because of the unique demographics it can reach (non-gamers, women, children). (source)
- May 11th, 2016: DeNA Chief Executive Isao Moriyasu today mentioned to The Wall Street Journal that Animal Crossing will be a "free-to-start app," which a Nintendo spokeswoman has now confirmed. (source)
- July 5th, 2016: Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo's general manager of entertainment planning and development, discussed the possibility of creating physical controllers for smartphones at the company's annual shareholders meeting. (source)
- September 7, 2016: Super Mario Run is released ahead of Animal Crossing, prompting a delay in its release. In a press release, Nintendo says the app will still be released by March 31, 2017. (source)
