This thread isn't limited to strictly dogs, or strictly cats. I just wanted to post some of my alpaca photos. :)

Don't touch'em. I think I'm gonna make one of them my new avatar.

I have the perfect example of an oddball animal, which has a very special place in my heart. The okapi.

Haha, I'm guessing you didn't take that photo, but still pretty cute, kinda like a zebra that isn't a zebra. ;)

Very true, I did not. But I did adopt an okapi at London Zoo, and this photo was provided as evidence of my adoption. I went to visit her (for I named her Monika), but my photos were abysmal. She was only interested in the cabbage, not in posing for the camera.

Okapis are bizzarre animals. Most closely related to the giraffe, but oddly reminiscent of zebras, as you say. They can lick their own eyeballs and ears. Name another mammal that can do that!

Wow, you can adopt animals at the zoo? What rights do you have for the animal? Do you need to pay for it to be fed and taken care of? Can you see it free of charge whenever you want?

Anyway, below is a photo of my aunt, uncle, and cousin's dog Bobo who died a few days ago. This is me and Bobo in December going for a morning jog. Little did we know that she had cancer at the time and had been suffering. One morning, my uncle and Bobo were going for a walk, and she seemed to walk really slow. She never walks behind my uncle, only ahead of him, so this was strange. He quickly took her to the vet to get a checkup, and while my uncle went for lunch, the doctor found blood in the stomach, operated on the dog, and found the cancer around her liver and in other areas. The vet couldn't do anything about it because (from my understanding) the tumour covered a vein or artery and couldn't risk being cut. Anyway, my uncle went back and she had died. :( :(

Its so weird to know that the doctor had suffered......maybe for a year......and nobody knew. Everything seemed when they woke up, and when they went to sleep that night, their lives were completely different. :(

The doctor suffered?

dops7107, here's a okapi picture I took at the San Diego Zoo.

As for this Panda, it was also at the san Diego Zoo. I think Pandas have to be the coolest animals ever.
Just look at it... It's so cute. :p

Well it's more of a charity thing. You pay an annual donation - normally around £20 - and you get a little certificate and a free ticket to the zoo and a photo. So not much. If you pay more, you get different benefits, but basically you just get listed on a piece of paper with the names of all donors. It was funny when I went, because in the giraffe house there are two species: the giraffe and the okapi. The list of sponsors for the giraffe went for four pages (hundereds of names). The list for the okapi, however, was a shockingly short six names! I was distrssed. I knew then that this special animal needed care and attention (and they are a lot more endangered than bleedin' giraffes!)

Sorry to hear about Bobo. I've always grown up around dogs and I'm a big fan. One of my parents' dogs has just been diagnosed with a tumour; she's only 6 and the thing was the size of an orange. Outlook not good. I think it's a result of such forced inbreeding - mutations acculmulate, basically. But that doesn't detract from the fact that it's very sad to lose a beloved pet. :(

Yep pandas rock too. Vegetarian bears :p

While I'm at it, I'll post a picture I did take. This cat I lived with for a year in Nottingham. We were not best of friends. As noted above, I am a dog person, but when it comes to sharing a house, you kinda have to take the rough with the smooth. Anyway, this little critter urinated on my bed twice. I think my bed was her play-thing before I moved in - clearly she was stating her territory. All the same, doesn't she look so innocent? ;)

Haha, it looks like a big raccoon searching through a garbage bin. :p But yes, they're very cute.

I'm a big fan of small monkeys though, ever since I was very young. Here's one I took (yes, at the zoo). Always so curious!

Yeah, Bobo was around the same age. I didn't know about the excessive imbreeding of dogs, although your explanation does make sense. I always assumed it was bad luck. Maybe if you know you're sensitive and don't want to see your dog die at such a young age, maybe it's better to get a "mix"??

The weird thing about pure breeds is, essentially, they're all a bit messed up. I would say they are generally less smart, have behavioural issues, more prone to specific disorders and illnesses in general, and have a shorter lifespan. All the "troublesome" dogs I have known are pure breeds. They might look pretty (a subjective issue - some breeds are fugly), but they come with genetic baggage. My first dog, Bess, was a springer spaniel/collie cross - she was loyal, very intelligent and never had health problems. She lived to 15. When she died, that was a sad moment.

All from my bedroom window-- I don't realize they're there until my cats start meowing in despair that they can't go out and try to catch them (the bunnies, they know the deer would be off-limits :p).

I can't find any of my SF zoo picturs. Sigh. I saw the lion cubs when, well, they were cubs and not the adults they are now. Saw them at feeding time. :D

a few ones here

he kitty is mine, she is the real love of my life. ;-) cow from india, the rest are from my trip to africa. dang, its sad that i can only have 244k files.

Here's some shots of migrant birds that were netted for banding in Ft Morgan Alabama recently. In the spirit of 'adoption', I was able to adopt the Painted Bunting, and received a certificate with his band number. If he's ever netted again, they'll let me know where he is.

This is a Steller's Jay. Very tame and inquisitive it was. Taken on a ride up Mt Rainier, WA in March this year. The girl in the car is the friend I was visiting.

Incidentally this looks like one of those steller's jays in the Joshua Tree national park:

I had no idea before, so I tried to find out, and I think it's a ,,Phainopepla'':

http://birdweb.org/birdweb/bird_details.aspx?id=369

This birdy was funny to take pictures of, it's very shy and was giving very funny noises before flying away when I came too close.

But not as shy as this fellow:

which is a ,,Callipepla californica''.
