I tried searching but didnt find anything on this. when I receive an animated GIF it plays fine in the Message window on the little preview. but when i click on it to see it bigger it stops. Is the iphone not capable of viewing animated GIF's and if so then how does it work in the little preview?

Noticed the same thing as well. Hopefully Apple updates it so when we view/save it the animation still works.

oh ok thought it was just me. Seems odd that it works inside the message window meaning that the phone has the capability to play it some how.

Update

Anyone have any idea if there is a fix coming for this? Also, I've been trying to figure out the restrictions on the gifs and can't seem to pinpoint them. I seem to have no problem sending some animated gifs, then others will fail every single time. I thought at first it was size related, and after some experimentation (shrinking file vs successfully sending larger file) it seems the restrictions are more finite. Any clues?

Will, how are you able to send any animated gifs through MMS at all? I save them to my photo reel by holding my finger down on an image in Safari and save it, but when sending via MMS it's just the first frame. Do you send to MMS via email?

animated gifs also do not work with iPhoto.
I understand that the file format is not supported (unlike windows)

i send animated gifs all the time. here are the options:

1) press edit then forward the animated gif to someone
2) and this is the boat load ...
store all of your animated gifs on a server like (dropbox)
then when your ready to send just go to dropbox
copy image - then paste in mms.

Hope that helps.
