What is the best software I'd want to use if I wanted to dabble in low graphic animation for fun? I did a google and found that Flash seems to be the most popular, but I thought I'd ask a real human first.

I'm not an animator, so don't take this as professional advice. But I think most 2D animation pros use Toon Boom software which is available for Mac and Windows. They also have an "express" version for amateurs.
