I keep getting told that Animoji only works on the iPhone X because of facial mapping with the TrueDepth camera. I was watching the iPhone X review video on Marques Brownlee's page and he stated it actually uses just the front camera and could've been implemented on other iPhones. Whats the answer here? Explanation starts at 11:40

It uses the face camera to accurately capture and display the Animoji. You could do it with other cameras but the movement and stuff would it be as accurate and wouldn’t look as good.

I’ve seen similar stuff, heck I think even the Nintendo DS had something similar at one point.

I like the potential of Animoji but I did like I could sing really badly as a Unicorn and share that with my friend who had a 7 plus.

I think it’s cool that I can share it with other folks who don’t have an X

I haven’t even used the animoji feature on my X yet. Seem like too much of a gimmick to catch on

The difference being The Animoji's are likely not something that's going to appeal to everybody. But what Apple is really doing, is trying to set the timetable for 3D facial mapping and what it will be for years to come in the technology behind the Animoji's. They're just using Animoji's as a demonstrator to show this type of technology with 3-D facial mapping.
