Annoying cd/iTunes/internet problem

Hi,

I'm on dial-up (external Apple modem).

Whenever I load a cd into the SuperDrive to play into iTunes (while connected to the internet), I get kicked off the internet. I will load the cd, it will whirr for a bit, appear on the desktop as Audio CD, but the spinning beach ball will pop up over iTunes (audio cd won't show up) and spin for about 15 seconds.

Then the second my internet connection is dropped, the spinning beach ball goes away, and iTunes recognizes my cd fine. Then I have to reconnect to the internet.

This is EXTREMELY annoying.

I'm a new Mac user, btw. Any ideas on what this could be?

I bet it's the dialup. I've been dialup free for just over 4 years now, and I will never ever go back. Heck GPRS through my phone is faster.

Dialup connections are notorious for spontaneously disconnecting if your computer needs to "think" for even a brief period of time. Unfortunately, it seems that the time needed for the CD to be recognized by iTunes is enough to do it to you.

I don't know really know a way around it...I've been off dialup for several years now, but I'm heading to my parents house on Wednesday for the holidays and will have to survive for a week or so on it...ugh.

I played with it a little bit. I tried having Quicktime open up instead of iTunes. Quicktime recognized the cd, no problem, but it still disconnected me.

So...maybe i'm wrong here, but I don't think it's a software issue (exclusive to iTunes is what I mean) as it did the same thing with Quicktime. It usually disconnects me from the internet about 45 seconds after loading the cd.

Getting high speed internet access is, unfortunately, not an option. I live in rural North Carolina and high speed internet, spare the highly expensive satellite internet, is not available for my immediate area.

I would think it has to do with your dialup connection. The connections always seem weak and drop out unexpectedly. I would suggest you call your dialup provider as they may have some insight into your situation.
