I have this annoying issue where occasionally I download a file, like an image for instance, from chrome and the .crdownload gets placed on my desktop and stays there even though the file fully downloaded. The only way I have found that I can remove this is by restarting my Macbook Pro.

As a developer, I have between 12 -14 open windows and rebooting each time this happens is not convenient. Please tell me someone here also experiences this issue and that there is any easier way to remove it?

Thanks!

That usually means the download is in progress or failed while in progress. The .crdownload file should be deleted once the file is copied to the final download destination.

Agreed. I get that much. However, it fully downloads and sometimes just stays on the desktop. Any way to remove it without having to log off or reboot?

Try deleting it from the terminal. cd to the Desktop folder, and enter sudo rm -rd xxx.crdownload, where xxx is the filename. You need sudo to get pass the permissions. Alternately you can reset the permissions and then delete it. But terminal is more fun.:D

I thought of that too already unfortunately :(. I just did it again b/c I couldn't remember the exact error but here it is.

rm: demo-offer-banner2.jpg.crdownload: No such file or directory

Strange b/c I can clearly see it on my desktop. You think it may be some sort of memory issue?

"File not found" is strange. Does ls -la show the file? Also see if it is aliased from the download folder.

FWIW, here is another procedure.

Thanks for all the help Jerry! It doesn't show in Downloads either nor does it show when I type ls -la when on the Desktop or Downloads folder hence the annoying part lol I've attached a screenshot of it sitting on my Desktop haha. It will go away if I reboot but I hate having to do that.

Previous download from Chome failed, or user cancelled mid-way sometimes the .crdownload won't auto-delete itself..

The same issue happens in Firefox as well.... It usually appears in Downloads, or where file is downloaded to. Just trash to trash and empty..

Perhaps crdownload is hidden or u changed default download location for the downloaded file?

Thanks for the reply. I like your username btw! I have my downloads set to my desktop. I never stop a download and the download doesn't fail either when this happens. I actually just had it happen again a few minutes ago. Downloaded fine, file shows up fine but the .crdownload doesn't get deleted. So aggravating! You can't move it to the trash either b/c it says "The item “No-Image-GF-1600.jpg.crdownload” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted.".

Crazy to say the least! Could it be because I'm using my desktop instead of the downloads folder?

P.S. Good to know it isn't just a chrome issue also!

No.. you can save to Desktop, Documents & Downloads..

Try this:

(1. Go into your home directory /Library, or (Go Menu folder, Hold down Option and click Library), go into "Caches" folder and Trash all contents, but don't empty.. Reboot..

If problem doesn't go away, look at System Preferences, Users & Groups > Login Items and see if anything else is loading at startup.

Alternatively

(2 you can just create anther account and testing from there. That will tell you if its system-wide, or an account issue.. (e.g when you reboot Mac, login to this new account, install browser u want, and test again) ... If problem goes away, its an account issue.

Depending on when problem started it can also be due to any apps installed which lead to this.

Booting to "Safe Boot" could also be a trick as well.. https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201262

but using test account should be ok. Apart from that,, there really is nothing more it could be other than "repair disk permissions" in Disk utility

Is Chrome up to date? Have you tried deleting/reinstalling Chrome?

As Tech198 suggested, see if the issue persists when you use Safe Boot or a different Admin User account.

When you said the file "fully downloaded" - is there a separate file of the same name that you can open?

What if you remove the .crdownload extension from the filename and try to open it?

My understanding is that .crdownload is a temporary extension, which Chrome removes from the file once the download is finished. Perhaps the download doesn't actually finish, perhaps the download finishes but the crdownload extension is not removed and the file is not unlocked, as it should be.

I know this is an old thread but if anyone sees this. I was having this issue. I used Onyx <https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html> to fix it. I just ran Maintenance>Junk items (You can run all cleaning and Misc. options at the same time and it does wonders also). After the computer restarts the .crdownload files were gone.
