Well I got the iOS 5 GM installed on my iPad today and went to setup iCloud on it but I decided to use my expired MobileMe account with it so I can access my email again (I still used the account for apps and Find My iPhone) it all went seemingly fine and Mail was shown as activated so I went onto the mail app and it didn't sync any mail. Weirded out I decided to try and log into the account in Mail on my Mac but it said the username and password were incorrect (something along those lines) so then I went to safari and typed in iCloud and logged in via the web apps but mail still doesn't work and acts like it crashed and wants me to send a report to apple? everything else just works and syncs normally except Mail and that was the whole point of me wanting to use my old @me.com address. This is really getting frustrating!

I got the same problem with my expired MobileMe account. Mail on my iPad (iOS 5 GM) just doesn't work, it says "wrong username or pass..."
I thought it's something wrong with my Apple ID so I have logged in at Apple's website and it says I should confirm my @me.com email. To do so they have sent a confirmation mail to my expired ...@me.com address.., Great, but I don't have any access to it! Because me.com website doesn't work now and Mail client on iPad says "wrong username or pass..." Very stupid situation!
Can anyone help?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

The reason you're getting that error is because your email account is deactivated. You should still be able to use features like Find My iPhone, calendar, and contacts. Your expired email account will probably be activated within the next few days.

I really hope so...

My expired @me.com address is both sending and receiving on my iPhone and from iCloud.com, however, the MacOS mail client will not except the password.

maybe not. I'm getting the same with my migrated fully paid for iCloud account, which has mostly worked ok before. Various people have been having problems like this across at times across the betas. Probably Apple fiddling with things prior to full launch.

I migrated my expired MobileMe account to iCloud about 3 weeks back. Everything worked fine on iCloud in safari except mail. Kept getting the above error. Then last friday, when apple deleted all the iCloud data and backup from their servers, my mail got activated.

Be patient. Your email will start working in a few days. Am guessing by next Tuesday.

I keep getting the "password or username incorrect" message when using the iOS 5 GM mail app too. Is there a solution to this?

I had a MobileMe trial back in March, but i didn't register, i just cancelled the trial.

NEW me.com email has same problem

I didn't migrate a me.com address; I never had one. But I was allowed to set one up when I signed up for iCloud yesterday ... and I'm having the same problem. I have been able to send email from my me.com address using my iPhone, but when I log into the website Mail "crashes" (same error message quoted above) and my iPhone gives me an error that it's unable to connect to the server when I try to check my me.com email.

Boo :(

Having this same issue, can't check mail through Firefox (don't have Safari on work laptop) and phone (iPhone 4) gives me a message stating the username/password is incorrect. This is while using a me.com account that i've had for a few years and has been active...

It sounds like it's the Apple Mail servers. I'm having the same issue on multiple devices and browsers.

This is really annoying. Using the default server iCloud assigns then it says the ports can not be reached on this server (p05-mail.me.com). According to someone on the Apple forums p05 doesn't even exist only p01-p04. I tried p01 and with p0x. Both work sometimes but sometimes it keeps asking for my password again and won't accept it.

Apple isn't acknowledging a problem on their status page either :(
http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/systemstatus/

Same message on my iPhone 4 and iPad. Apple seems to allocate them randomly because my wife is on server p06 with the same problems. Maybe the people on servers p04 and lower automatically are just lucky and not experiencing the same problems.

Come on Apple. Please recognise this problem and get it fixed ASAP as I really don't want to go back to Gmail, but at least Gmail can send and receive email consistently!

All the other iCloud features seem to be working great though.
