So I've had an iMac for a while, and have been comparing mine, to my friend's with the same specs, except he has the western digital drive, i have the seagate. His computer is DEAD silent, not a sound from the HD, don't hear a fan, but i compared the fan speeds on both imacs, and they were the same! As a matter of fact, his, with the western digital, had fans spinning faster, and his iMac was quieter!!! Right there then, I knew the hum from my iMac had nothing to do with my fans, must've been the seagate drive. Well, overall, i like my seagate drive and all, and for an odd reason, i guess apple didn't pay attention to this, my iMac is considerably faster at opening applications, booting up and all, so my seagate definitely faster than his WD. My seagate makes the usual quiet clicking sound when its reading, or writing, or whenever its working. But his iMac with the WD, is dead silent, I put my ear to the imac, and i barely heard i sound, you can hear my imac from like 5 yards away in a quiet room. His HD, strangely, doesn't making the usual clicking sound. its silent, but mine is faster, his fans are spinner faster though, but my iMac is loud. Seagate claims this is a quiet drive, but apparently it isn't, WD says the same about his, but at least they actually say that they have done research on it, seagate is talking **** about it being quiet.

But more to the point, it makes an annoying hum, and randomly, and no specific interval, the hum will "lower the volume", as in become less loud for like 3 seconds, doesnt mean its quiet, it just gets slightly quieter for 3 seconds at random times. Is this normal? Who out there has a Seagate Drive in their iMac? Do you hear anything from 2 feet away? should i call apple about this.

I have a WD external, and boy, ITS LOUD AS HELL!! i had to lock it up in the CPU box thats in my desk, no, really, i did.

EDIT: just want to add, the clicking sound when i turn it on and stuff, its normal and everything, but when opening an application, i hear a lot of clicks that make it quiet loud.

Also, when sleeping or turning off, after 3 or so seconds after the screen goes off, i can hear a high pitched spirling sound from the HD, i can hear it slow down!!

There are a few threads where people have an annoying humming sound similar to what you described. I had it on mine and it was driving me mad so I returned it to Apple this week...who have subsequently misplaced it!!! 3 Days now and they still can't find it :(

My advice would be to send it back....on the official apple forums there is quite a lot of discussion about this. There should be no noise other than the fans and disk access, mine was humming continuosly, you could even feel it vibrating through the desktop...really annoying...

I also have the 2.8GHz with 500GB HDD

Did it have the Seagate drive??? Please tell me you did!!!

Anyone else?

What kind of hum is it? Usually low hums indicate noise coming from the optical drive. For some reason mine spins up everytime the OS is about to load, regardless of whether or not there's a CD in the drive. I've never owned a Mac that would do that before.
High pitched whirring noises are usually hard drives. All hard drives make different noises. As an IT consultant, I've even seen the same brand of hard drive/same model number perform and sound differently, but are usually pretty similar in performance. Your Seagate may very well be just a noisy HD. One thing you could try is installing an OS on an external drive and then booting up off the external drive. I'm pretty sure you are able to unmount the internal drive completely once it's booted (don't quote me on that, haven't had to do that in a while), so it shouldn't be accessing that drive at all. If you still hear the noise, I would surmise that it's something other than your HD. Even if you don't unmount the internal HD, it shouldn't be accessing it nearly as much, so it should be a lot quieter.

I think all is fine, my friends iMac makes the same noise, just maybe a tad less, im exaggerating, plus my room is much quieter, he has like 5 kids in the house, found out, my imac is normal, and for some reason a i love it more knowing that the noise is normal, and im getting an even faster HD:D

Though, I am kinda jealous that his iMac doesnt make the "click" sounds :(, not the "Tuck tuck tuck" the normal sounds when its working, his HD doesn't make it, but oh well, my HD only makes it after i just turn on the computer and open safari, after a while, if i open safari again after keeping the computer on, the click sound isn't as much.

When I had my iMac it was totally quiet, couldn't hear anything unless i listened real close.

Yeah sorry, don't want to rain on your parade, but mine's almost completely silent as well. The only time I hear anything is when I restart my iMac and the CD drive spins up/down. Aside from that, unless I'm copying data, it's pretty darn silent.

Nothing to do with Hard Drive Faillure but more like 24" Macs with a disturbing flaw.

Brand new 3.06Hz 4GBmem 1TB HD. Hmmmmmmmm. To go nuts.

Had it replaced, same story. And gonna return it again.

Because this one also has it I thought it must have been the new 3.06GHz processory and it's requirement to stay cool but seems that the 2.8 GHz have it as well

I don't want another 20" we already have one and it's dead silent. No hum no nothing.

What I did notice that if you place like 2 feet from the wall one doesn't notice the hum. So it's definitely projecting out of the back of the imac.

I think we are going to see more of these posts.

And don't compromise on this, I mean it should be dead silent.
