So I've had an iMac for a while, and have been comparing mine, to my friend's with the same specs, except he has the western digital drive, i have the seagate. His computer is DEAD silent, not a sound from the HD, don't hear a fan, but i compared the fan speeds on both imacs, and they were the same! As a matter of fact, his, with the western digital, had fans spinning faster, and his iMac was quieter!!! Right there then, I knew the hum from my iMac had nothing to do with my fans, must've been the seagate drive. Well, overall, i like my seagate drive and all, and for an odd reason, i guess apple didn't pay attention to this, my iMac is considerably faster at opening applications, booting up and all, so my seagate definitely faster than his WD. My seagate makes the usual quiet clicking sound when its reading, or writing, or whenever its working. But his iMac with the WD, is dead silent, I put my ear to the imac, and i barely heard i sound, you can hear my imac from like 5 yards away in a quiet room. His HD, strangely, doesn't making the usual clicking sound. its silent, but mine is faster, his fans are spinner faster though, but my iMac is loud. Seagate claims this is a quiet drive, but apparently it isn't, WD says the same about his, but at least they actually say that they have done research on it, seagate is talking **** about it being quiet.
But more to the point, it makes an annoying hum, and randomly, and no specific interval, the hum will "lower the volume", as in become less loud for like 3 seconds, doesnt mean its quiet, it just gets slightly quieter for 3 seconds at random times. Is this normal? Who out there has a Seagate Drive in their iMac? Do you hear anything from 2 feet away? should i call apple about this.
I have a WD external, and boy, ITS LOUD AS HELL!! i had to lock it up in the CPU box thats in my desk, no, really, i did.
EDIT: just want to add, the clicking sound when i turn it on and stuff, its normal and everything, but when opening an application, i hear a lot of clicks that make it quiet loud.
Also, when sleeping or turning off, after 3 or so seconds after the screen goes off, i can hear a high pitched spirling sound from the HD, i can hear it slow down!!
