I'm not sure which apps do that, I only found it in Safari so far. I'm on macOS Sonoma and when I move the cursor near the left edge of the window, the UI suggests to resize the window and websites shift their layouts a little. It's super annoying and I'm pretty sure it's new in macOS Sonoma or Safari 17.0.

Does anyone know if it's Safari's feature or macOS's? And can it be disabled?

I hate this too, this is in safari. I believe this is related to tab grouping

That happens when there is a sidebar, it shows a bit of the sidebar so you can drag and enlarge it.

It also happens when no sidebar is showing. I believe it is a bug. Hoping it would've been fixed in macOS Sonoma 14.1 but after having just installed the udpate I see that it still happens.

I believe that when the sidebar is hidden it should only be showna gain by clicking the "Show sidebar" button again. This is annoying when you have the cursor sitting on the left edge of the Safari window and want to scroll.

I think it only happens when the sidebar is hidden. It's meant to give you a hint that you can open the sidebar that way. I'd be quite okay with it if it didn't cause resizing of the viewport. Sometimes it surprises me how bad decisions are accepted into final versions of Apple apps.

I can't for the life of me reproduce this problem. When I move my cursor to the left side of the window, absolutely nothing happens - no matter if I have the sidebar open or not.

Hide the sidebar and move the cursor ALMOST at the far left and leave it there for a second or two.

Bringing this back to life. Has anyone found a solution? I came here for this exact reason... you can't leave your cursor near the edge of the window without macOS thinking you want to resize. very annoying.

Ok, NOW I see it (when I leave the cursor sitting close to but not at the very edge of the window).

But I have to ask "who purposely moves the cursor ALMOST to the edge of the browser window and leaves it sitting there without moving the cursor?"

I mean really, the problem I see is that the spot isn't larger/wider and the sidebar starts sliding out on its own allowing you to just click it to open it (kind of like the hidden Dock). I can't remember what browser does/did that, but it was handy.

You could also ask "who purposely clicks on the locker icon in Safari when they wanted to click on the search bar", but the answer is nobody (unless they really want to see the certificate, that is). Yet many people click it on accident. Same with this edge issue. I move the cursor there sometimes for some reasons, mostly to scroll a sidebar or whatever (trackpad scrolling) and it triggers this effect. Annoying as heck.

You got me there. I've clicked that stupid lock icon too many times to count, and it IS annoying as heck. But to me, that's just bad placement because it's right next to another thing that many, many people want to click. The side of the window is kind of an obscure case – though I'll grant you that once you see it happen, you can't unsee it and you notice it every single time it does happen.

That lock should be placed to the very left or anywhere where it would have its fixed position. Stupid of Safari UX designer to make it move with the URL length change.

This edge issue usually happens to me on YouTube, which causes entire layout to shift and that's so frustrating.
