Another 15" MBP Just Got Switcher Thread

I just got my first Mac - 15" Macbook Pro yeaterday and have been playing around with it alot (of course). I mostly use Windows so the Mac is something else to get used to. I miss the Delete key from windows and setting up iPhoto and iTunes will take sometime.

It does get a little hot but I tested the temperature with and it never topped 65 degrees Celsius. No whine just a soft hum from the harddrive.

BTW the glossy screen is awesome. When I first turned it on it looked like a matte screen. Even my father thought it was a matte screen before it shined it in direct light. Best one I have ever seen. I'll write more when I use it outside at Barnes & Nobles or something.

Does anyone have any suggestions on bags and sleeves? I'm thinking about getting a Chrome bag and a Booq Sleeve and was wondering if anyone else has this combo?

And does anyone know any good free word processors?

Next, get Bootcamp/Windows XP.

NeoOffice/Open Office(NeoOffice does not use X11 so try that first) seem to be the Open Source(and Free) Word Prossesors of choice around here, I like Pages which is 79 buck with Keynote(which comes in iWork '06, keynote is a Apple's answer to PowerPoint,and its much better IMO)

Many people here also use MS Office for Mac OS X, but its to price for me, and i moves to OS X to get away from Windows.

I miss the Delete key from windows...

The lack of a "reverse delete" key is the one thing that annoys me about Apple's laptop keyboards (Apple's desktop keyboards all have it). That said, if you hold down the fn key way down at bottom left, delete will do a reverse delete. So really, it's not that bad once you get used to shooting your pinky down to that corner of the keyboard for the extra keystroke.

And does anyone know any good free word processors?

Have you tried the built-in TextEdit? It doesn't do anything fancy like tables or a grammar cheker, but it has all the features of a basic word processor, and is often all I really need. You've got all the font options you could ever ask for (with better ligature and kerning support than Office), complete multi-language support, linespacing, left/right/center/balance justification, all your standard tab stop features, basic list support, and underlining/correction of misspelled words via the built-in OSX spelling service.

All you're really missing are header/footer, columns and tables. I just noticed it even exports HTML 4.01 or XHTML 1.0 in your choice of Strict or Transitional.

If that's not enough for you and you don't mind spending a few bucks on shareware, check out Mellel--it's got a somewhat Word-like interface, and all your basic word processing tools. Try before you buy, of course, so no need to pay the $50 find out if you don't like it.

I've tried NeoOffice, and while it's certainly got every feature in the world and is very free, it's rather ugly, and I rarely need that kind of power.

I have the booq custom sleeve for my macbookpro and I love that thing. It protects the book great. I put in one of my old L.L.Bean bookbags so people dont think theirs a computer in there. Only problem is I think the booq sleeves are backorderd right now
